UMSL Wins Series Finale at Central Arkansas Rivermen go 1-2 on the Weekend Conway, Ark. – The UMSL baseball team got big win in the series finale at Central Arkansas, winning Sunday's game 13-10. The Rivermen dropped a doubleheader at Central Arkansas on Saturday afternoon, losing the first game 9-5 and dropping the second game 10-6. On Sunday, the UMSL bats came alive, belting out 16 hits and scoring 13 runs on the day. The Rivermen got the early lead, jumping out to a 6-0 advantage before Central Arkansas came back to take the lead at 7-6. UMSL responded quickly, scoring seven total runs in the fifth and sixth innings and held on for the win. Doug Wiles (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) and Mike Wulff (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) each had three hits on the day for the Rivermen. In the first game, Central Arkansas got on the board quickly, scoring four runs in the first inning. UMSL would get on the board in the fourth inning, as Logan Hughes (Branson, Mo./Walnut Shade) brought home the first run with an RBI double and then scored on an RBI single by brother Colby Hughes (Branson, Mo./Walnut Shade) to make it a 4-2 game. Central Arkansas then added two more runs in the fifth for a 6-2 lead before the Rivermen threatened again in the sixth. UMSL got started again by one of the Hughes brothers as Colby Hughes hit a two-run double, scoring brother Logan and Mike Wulff. Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s) then knocked in Colby Hughes with an RBI single and cut the lead to one at 6-5. The Bears would answer right back however, scoring three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning for the 9-5 win. Starting pitcher Steven McCoy (Potosi, Mo./Potosi) took the loss for UMSL, as he fell to 0-2 on the season. The Bears got off to a quick start again in the second game, scoring one run in the first and three more in the second inning off UMSL starter Matt Kueny (Boonville, Mo./Boonville), who would take the loss in this game. UMSL would get on the board in the fourth on an RBI double by Colby Hughes, but Central Arkansas got one of their own in the bottom half of the inning. In the fifth, UMSL added two more runs, one coming on an RBI single by Josh Morgan. Again, Central Arkansas answered right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and led 7-3 after five innings. UMSL cut the lead to one in the sixth. Logan Hughes got the first run of the inning, scoring after an error on a base hit by Mike Wulff. Colby Hughes then hit a two-run home run and made it a 7-6 game. The Bears would score three runs in the bottom of the eight to extend their lead and win the second game 10-6. On the day, UMSl was led at the plate by Colby Hughes, who went 6-for-8 on the day with two runs and six RBIs, including a double and a home run. Logan Hughes went 3-for-8 with three runs and one RBI and Mike Wulff added four hits in the two games. UMSL drops to 1-4 on the season and will
close out the weekend series at Central Arkansas on Sunday with a single
game beginning at 11 am.
