Four Baseball Players Named All-Region Drewes, Davis, Hughes, Mercer All Named Second Team Selections St. Louis, Mo. – The postseason honors for the Missouri-St. Louis Baseball team continue to roll in, as four UMSL players were all named 2004 ABCA/Rawlings North Central Region Second Team selections. Pitcher Brad Drewes (St. Louis, Mo.), shortstop Scott Davis (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest), third baseman Logan Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) and outfielder Jonathan Mercer (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) were all named second team all-region selections. Logan Hughes continues to add to his personal list of postseason honors with his all-region second team selection. Hughes was voted as a second team All-Conference player in the GLVC earlier this year. He has also been named a CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection and last week was announced as the recipient of the GLVC Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award. This past season, Hughes hit .345 on the season, third best on the team, and led the Rivermen with 70 hits, six home runs and 56 RBIs. His 56 RBIs tied the school record for most RBIs in a single season, matching the record he set last year. Hughes scored 39 runs on the season and had 12 doubles with a slugging percentage of .517. Hughes started off the season with a bang, hitting safely in each of the first 14 games of the season. Brad Drewes was UMSL’s top starting pitcher this season, piling up a record of 8-2 on the season with a 2.77 ERA. He had five complete games on the year in nine starts, and picked up one save. He led the team with 51 strikeouts in 65 innings pitched and was a GLVC All-Conference First Team selection. Drewes turned in one of his better performances of the year against Kentucky Wesleyan at the GLVC Tournament when he threw a complete game victory, allowing just one run on three hits over nine innings to help UMSL advance in the tournament. Scott Davis led the Rivermen in hitting on the season, finishing with a .366 batting average while collecting 60 hits on the year. He added 26 runs scored, six doubles, two triple and 26 RBIs on the season. Davis was 15-of-20 in stolen bases on the season and was the starting shortstop most of the season. Earlier this season, Davis was voted as a GLVC First Team All-Conference selection at shortstop. Jonathan Mercer was the fourth UMSL player to receive all-region honors as an outfielder after being selected to the GLVC All-Conference First Team. Mercer was one of UMSL’s top hitters on the season, finishing second on the team with a .347 batting average and second with 69 hits on the year. He also led the team in both slugging percentage at .538, and on base percentage at .427. He added 56 runs scored, 17 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 48 RBIs on the season, all good for second best on the team in each category. Mercer was 14-of-16 in stolen bases on the season and had seven outfield assists on the year. As
a team, the Rivermen finished the year with a 30-23-1 record overall
and had a 23-13 record in the GLVC. UMSL was third in the regular season
standings but finished second in the conference at the GLVC Tournament.
