Six UMSL Players Receive All-Conference Honors Davis, Mercer, Drewes Named First Team All-Conference St. Louis, Mo. –The Missouri-St. Louis baseball team had six players named to the GLVC All-Conference team. Brad Drewes, Scott Davis and Jonathan Mercer were all named first team all-conference selections and Logan Hughes, Josh Morgan and Scott Sanders were all named second team selections. Scott Davis (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) was voted a first team all-conference selection at shortstop after leading UMSL in hitting with a .376 average on the season. In conference games, Davis hit .436, which was the best batting average of any regular starter in the GLVC. Davis was 48-for-110 in GLVC games, and had 25 runs scored and 26 RBIs on the season and was 15-for-20 in stolen bases on the year. Jonathan Mercer (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) was a first team all-conference selection in the outfield. Mercer was second on the team in hitting with a .359 batting average, and led the team in runs scored with 54 runs in just 50 games played. Mercer had a team high 17 doubles and three triples, and was second on the team with 66 hits and 47 RBIs on the year. He scored 32 runs in 36 conference games to lead the GLVC in that category and was fourth in the conference with 34 RBIs in GLVC games. The third UMSL player to receive first team all-conference honors was starting pitcher Brad Drewes (St. Louis, Mo.). He finished with a 7-2 record on the season and a 3.05 ERA. All seven of his wins came in GLVC games, which tied for second most victories in the conference. In conference games, he had a 2.95 ERA, allowing 24 runs and striking out 48 hitters in 55 innings pitched. Drewes had four complete games pitched in eight starts on the season. The Rivermen had three players receive second team all-conference honors as well, led by third baseman Logan Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson). Hughes was the cleanup hitter for the Rivermen all season, leading the team with six home runs and 54 RBIs on the season. He had a team best 67 hits on the year, scoring 39 runs and had 12 doubles and two triples. His 54 RBIs are two shy of the school singles season record of 56 RBIs that Hughes set last year. Scott Sanders (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) was a second team all-conference selection for the second consecutive year at first base. Sanders hit .342 on the season with 45 runs scored and 30 RBIs. He had 34 runs scored in the 36 conference games which was the fourth highest total in the GLVC. Sanders was third on the team with 63 hits on the season, including 13 doubles and two home runs. Over the past two full seasons, Sanders has made a total of just six errors at first base. The third second team selection was utility player Josh Morgan (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary’s) who was both a starting outfielder and a starting pitcher for the Rivermen. At the plate, Morgan hit .307 on the season, with 23 runs scored, 11 doubles, three home runs and 42 RBIs. He also led the team and tied for the conference lead in stolen bases with 19 on the season. Morgan made big contribution on the mound as well, starting in 10 games for UMSL and finishing with a 6-2 record and a 4.37 ERA on the year. Morgan got the win in two of the bigger wins for UMSL this year, getting a win early in the year against then 15th-ranked Florida Southern, and he pitched a complete game two hitter against GLVC regular season champion Wisconsin-Parkside. Opponents in conference games hit just .188 off Morgan on the season. The Rivermen had a regular season record
of 28-21-1 on the year and placed third in the GLVC regular season standings
with a 23-13 conference record. UMSL enters this weekend’s GLVC
Tournament as the three seed and opens up play on Thursday night at
7 pm against fourth-seeded Quincy.
