UMSL Win Completes Weekend Sweep

Rivermen Improve to 35-13 on the Season

St. Louis, Mo. – The wet weather and a rain soaked outfield could not slow down the UMSL baseball team, who beat Saint Joseph’s 6-2 Sunday afternoon to complete a weekend series sweep against the Pumas.

Bobby Tiefenauer (Desloge, Mo./St. Francois County) pitched a gem and picked up the win to improve to 6-0 on the season. After giving up a leadoff single in the top of the first, Tiefenauer went on to retire the next 12 batters to kill any hopes of an early rally by the Pumas. On the game, Tiefenauer sprinkled eight hits over eight plus innings, striking out seven and walking just one. The Rivermen got on the board with a run in the second. Scott Miller (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) knocked a double to left center, one of his three hits on the day. Scott Davis (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) then got a two-out single to bring Miller home with the first run of the game.

In the third inning, the Rivermen swamped St. Joseph’s starter Andy Augsburger with four big runs. Tony Grana (Ballwin, Mo./Lafayette) and Jim Reiter (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) led off with consecutive base hits and Bryan Weiss (St. Peters, Mo./Francis Howell North) drew a walk to load the bases. Logan Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) then drenched the Pumas with a blast over the left field fence for a grand slam and a 5-0 UMSL lead. The Rivermen would add to the deluge by adding another run in the fourth on an RBI single from Bryan Weiss for a 6-0 lead. St. Joseph’s would finally get on the board in the eighth, getting four hits in the inning and scoring two runs to make it a 6-2 game. Josh Green (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) then came in to pitch in the ninth and dampened any hopes of a Pumas comeback by gettting the final three outs to secure the win.

UMSL improves to 35-13 on the season and 22-7 in the GLVC. The Rivermen have one more regular season game remaining, a single game at Quincy on Monday, May 5, at 5 pm. UMSL has already clinched the top-seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament, which will be hosted by the Rivermen beginning on Thursday, May 8. The Rivermen will open up with a first round game on Thursday, May 8, against sixth-seeded Kentucky Wesleyan at 3 pm.
