UMSL's Reiter Named GLVC Player of the Week

Senior Outfielder Earns Award for Second Time This Season

St. Louis, Mo. – For the second time this season, UMSL senior outfielder Jim Reiter (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Co-Player of the Week. Reiter earned the honor this week along with Garrett Guest of Saint Joseph’s.

Reiter made his presence known both at the plate and in the field during UMSL’s five games last week, all wins for the 8th-ranked Rivermen. For the week, Reiter hit .389, going 7-for-18 from the plate, scored five runs, hit one triple and one home run and knocked in six RBIs. His slugging percentage for the week was .667 and he drew three walks for an on base percentage of .500.

In a game against Quincy last week, Reiter hit at two-run homer that highlighted an eight-run inning for UMSL in a 9-8 victory. Perhaps his biggest contributions to UMSL’s five wins last week came on the defensive end. In a 1-0 win over Quincy, the Rivermen were leading by one in the sixth inning. The Hawks had a runner on second and got a base hit to left center field, but Reiter got to the ball and bare handed it as the ball hopped up, then made a perfect throw to the cut off man to throw the runner out at the plate and preserve the 1-0 UMSL lead.

Later in the week, Reiter again made a defensive web gem to save the game against Northern Kentucky. With the game tied 6-6 in the top of the eighth, NKU had bases loaded with two outs and got a deep fly ball to left center. Reiter, who had been shading the hitter towards right field, came all the way over to left center and made a full speed diving catch that ended the inning and saved three runs. In that same game, he went 3-for-4 from the plate with one run and two RBIs, including an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth that brought home the game-winning run.

This is the second time Reiter has been named GLVC Player of the Week, having also earned Co-Player of the Week honors back on March 18. Tony Grana (Ballwin, Mo./Lafayette) is the other UMSL player to earn Player of the Week honors having received that honor on March 25.

The Rivermen are 26-7 on the season and are currently in first place in the GLVC with a 14-3 conference record. UMSL will host Lincoln on Wednesday at 3 pm and then travel to play at Indianapolis this weekend.
