UMSL Falls to Lincoln in Rain Shortened Game

Rivermen Fall 6-5 to Blue Tigers

St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL baseball team fell to Lincoln 6-5 on Wednesday afternoon, in a game called in the top of the eighth inning due to rain, halting any UMSL chances for yet another late inning rally that has been a trademark for the team this season.

Lincoln got the first lead of the game with two runs in the top of the first. UMSL battled back in the second, getting RBI singles from Scott Miller (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) and Josh Thomas (Pevely, Mo./Herculaneum) that tied the score at 2-2. The Blue Tigers came back with two more runs in the third for a 4-2 lead. The Rivermen would come to within one run after an RBI single from Scott Sanders (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) that scored Jason Barron (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood East) who went 2-for-4 with two runs on the day. UMSL would tie the game again as Scott Davis (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) brought home Sanders to make it a 4-4 game.

The Blue Tigers responded yet again, scoring two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead. UMSL would add another single run on the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) that made it 6-5 and brought the Rivermen to within one run. With one out in the top of the eighth, the rain came down hard and after waiting for over an hour, the game was finally called with UMSL losing 6-5.

The Rivermen are now 26-8 on the season and will have a big weekend of conference games at Indianapolis. UMSL currently is 14-3 and in first place in the GLVC and Indianapolis is second in the conference at 14-7. The teams will play a total of four games, two Friday and two Saturday, with the first three of those counting as conference games.
