| UMSL Sweeps Lewis Rivermen Win Big in Game One; Win Thriller in Game Two St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL baseball team extended their winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of Lewis on Sunday afternoon. The Rivermen won the first game 10-1 in a conference matchup, then went extra innings to win the second game 5-4, in a non-conference game. In the opener, UMSL got its third straight complete game pitching performance as Matt Kueny went the distance, giving up just one run on six hits and struck out three in nine innings of work. Kueny improved to 3-0 on the season with the win. Doug Wiles got the offense started with an RBI double in the third that scored Colby Hughes. Another run came across in the fourth on an RBI single by Scott Davis for a 2-0 UMSL lead. The Rivermen then added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Jason Barron scored from third on a double steal in the sixth and Tony Grana had an RBI single in the seventh. Lewis got on the board in the top of the eighth before UMSL came back and exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Colby Hughes had an RBI single in the inning before Jim Reiter knocked in two runs with a two-run double and then scored on a double by Bryan Weiss that gave UMSL the 10-1 win. The second game was a non-conference game that was scheduled to go seven innings, but wound up going nine before UMSL pulled off the extra inning win. The Rivermen got the first run of the game in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Scott Davis. Lewis came right back in the second and scored three runs of their own, the big blow coming off the bat of Chris Carbonaro who knocked in two runs with a double and then scored on a groundout, giving the Flyers a 3-1 lead. The Rivermen would retake the lead in the fifth as Jim Reiter led off with a single and scored on an RBI single by Bryan Weiss. Jason Barron then blasted a two-run homer to leftcenter, giving the Rivermen a 4-3 lead after five innings. The Flyers added a run in the sixth to tie the game and force extra innings. In the ninth, UMSL was again sparked by a single from Reiter who then moved to second after a base hit by Weiss. Logan Hughes then roped a single to left but Reiter was thrown out trying to score from second. With two outs, Scott Davis then knocked a long base hit to center field, bringing in Weiss for the game-winning run. Colby Hughes had four hits on the day, including a 3-for-3 performance in the first game, and picked up the win in relief in the second game as well, improving to 2-0 on the year. Jim Reiter went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs in game one, and went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the second game. Jason Barron was 3-for-7 on the day with three runs and two RBIs and a home run. is now 13-2 on the season and are riding a seven-game winning streak.
The Rivermen will be in action again on Wednesday when UMSL will travel
to play a doubleheader at Quincy beginning at 3 pm.
