UMSL Splits at Wisconsin-Parkside

Rivermen Lose Conference Game in Extra Innings

Kenosha, Wis. - The UMSL baseball team split a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Rivermen, UWP won the conference game in extra innings and UMSL took the second game, which counts as a non-conference contest.

The first game was an extra inning thriller that saw UMSL score four runs in the eighth to tie the game and one in the top of the tenth before giving up three runs in the bottom of the inning to lose 7-5. The Rangers scored once in the second inning to take the early lead and added three more runs in the seventh off UMSL starter Bobby Tiefenauer (Desloge, Mo./St. Francois County), who took the not decision in the game. Trailing 4-0 going into the eighth, the Rivermen offense caught fire and came back to tie the game. Tony Grana (Ballwin, Mo./Lafayette) led off the inning with a solo homer. Scott Sanders (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) then hit a two-run triple to right and then scored on an RBI single by Colby Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) to tie the game at 4-4. In the top of the tenth, Colby Hughes led off with a triple and then scored on an RBI single by Doug Wiles (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) for a 5-4 UMSL lead. In the bottom of the tenth, the Rangers then won the game on a three-run homer, which came after an error with two outs as UWP won the game 7-5.

UMSL got its revenge in the second game, beating the Rangers 13-5. The Rivermen got two runs in the first inning on a two-run single by Jason Barron (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood East). UWP would add a single run in the fourth before UMSL added five runs in the fifth inning. Jim Reiter (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) hit a two run homer in the inning and Logan Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) hit a solo homer to highlight the scoring that inning. The Rangers scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 7-5 came and keep it close, but the Rivermen responded with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to put it away. Jason Barron and Doug Wiles each had RBI singles in the sixth and Colby Hughes had an RBI double in the seventh for UMSL.

The Rivermen are now 30-13 on the season and 17-7 in the GLVC. UMSL is still in first place in the conference standings, leading both UWP and Quincy by four in the loss column and lead Indianapolis by five in the loss column. The Rivermen still have six games remaining as does Quincy, while UWP has four games left and Indianapolis has one. UMSL will be at home on Wednesday to host a doubleheader against Southern Indiana beginning at 12 noon.
