UMSL Splits at Wisconsin-Parkside

Each Team Throws Shutout in Doubleheader

Kenosha, Wis . - The UMSL baseball team split a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday as each team got a shutout in their respective wins. The Rivermen took the opener, winning 6-0 behind a strong pitching performance from Kevin Sahrmann (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell). The Rangers came back in the second game to win 2-0.

In the opener, Sahrmann shut down the UWP offense, allowing just three hits and one walk over 7.0 innings while striking out four. It was the second complete game shutout for Sahrmann on the season. Most of the UMSL offense came in the fourth inning as the Rivermen scored five runs to take control of the game. Bryan Weiss (St. Peters, Mo./Francis Howell North) brought in the first run with an RBI single. Logan Hughes (Walnut Shade, Mo./Branson) and Mike Wulff (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) each had sacrifice flies in the inning and Doug Wiles (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) capped off the scoring with a two run single. Scott Sanders (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) brought in the sixth run of the game in the fifth inning with an RBI single to give UMSL the 6-0 win.

Wisconsin-Parkside bounced back strong in the second game, getting a complete game shutout for the 2-0 win. UMSL managed just four hits in the game and never got a runner past second base in the loss. UWP got single runs in the second and third innings off UMSL starter Greg Bierling (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS), with the run in the third scoring on a fielding error. Bierling pitched 8.0 innings and gave up two runs, one earned, while striking out five and walking one in the loss.

UMSL is now 29-12 on the season and is 17-6 in the GLVC, and still hold the top spot in the conference standings. The Rivermen hold a five-game lead in the loss column over both Indianapolis and Wisconsin-Parkside. UMSL will face the Rangers for another doubleheader on Sunday, with the first game counting as a conference game and the second a non-conference game.
