Position Description for Director of Academic Effectiveness

The Director of Academic Effectiveness is a half-time faculty position responsible for administrative oversight of the effectiveness of student learning and assessments of learning on campus. The duties associated with this new position will include partnering with academic departments and colleges to enhance institutional assessment activities, contributing to institutional strategic planning efforts, providing data for accreditation efforts, and other duties related to assessment of student learning and academic effectiveness. The Director of Academic Assessment/Academic Effectiveness reports directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Collaborating with University of Missouri System and UMSL academic leadership, including deans, department chairs, center and institute directors, associate and vice provosts, Senate committee chairs, and other academic leaders to plan, implement, and evaluate UMSL’s five-year program review process;
  • Conducting the assessment of student learning at UMSL for all students by working with faculty, department chairs, deans, and other administrators to a) plan and implement learning outcomes, b) evaluate assessment processes for learning outcomes and program effectiveness; c)review and analyze assessment results, and d) coordinate implementation of changes as a result of these processes;
  • Working with the Director of General Education to assure accurate assessment of General Education;
  • Organizing and leading a new standing assessment committee, as recommended by the Senate Assessment Committee, designed to facilitate communication among the colleges and with the Provost and to support implementation of assessment priorities;
  • Serving as liaison to the Senate Committee on the Assessment of Educational Outcomes, representing the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs;
  • Leading the campus in carrying out the responsibilities associated with the sponsorship of charter schools, including writing annual reports and conducting biennial evaluations.

The ideal candidate for this half-time position will have an earned doctorate and hold a position as a faculty member on the tenure track at UMSL, preferably at the rank of associate professor or professor. He or she must have a record of teaching, research, and service commensurate with leadership in Academic Affairs, be dedicated to a transparent approach to assessment of student learning, and have a strong commitment to quality improvement. This position will be compensated by a course buyout arrangement with the appropriate department/college and one month summer pay. In the winter 2008 semester, compensation will be negotiated unless a course buyout is possible.
