Chancellor's Award for Excellence to a Non-Tenure Track Faculty Member
Purpose:
This Award recognizes and honors outstanding achievement in teaching, research, service or other contributions to undergraduate and/or graduate education by individuals who hold full-time (75 percent or higher) academic non-tenure track appointments.
Award:
An award plaque and honorarium of $2,500 is presented at the Chancellor's State of the University Address in the Fall semester.
Eligibility:
Nominee must hold a full-time, academic, non-tenure track appointment and have at least five years of service to UM-St. Louis.
Criterion:
Nominees must show evidence consistent with the priorities and goals outlined in the UM-St. Action Plan, demonstrating accomplishment and excellence in one or more areas such as teaching, university or community service, research and scholarship, and other professional activity. Specific criteria are found by clicking on each area.
The following criteria may be considered in preparing nomination:
- An approach to teaching and assessment that engages students in the process of learning.
- High standards that promote academic excellence.
- Innovative and effective teaching strategies.
- Efforts showing a commitment to improving teaching.
- Understanding of strategies that affect student learning.
University or Community Service
Contribution and/or impact of the service provided to the University, the community (including, but not limited to civic engagement), and/or the nominee’s profession.
Demonstration of superior performance in research, scholarship or other creative activity.
Submission Materials and Format:
All nominations must include the following materials.
- Cover page with name, position, academic address of nominee and nominator
- Table of contents
- Detailed nomination letter of support
- Curriculum vitae with website address (if available)
- Nominee’s statement of philosophy concerning teaching, research, or service outlining goals, strategies, methods, and outcomes. The statement should not exceed five double-spaced pages.
- Additional items for nominations including a focus on accomplishments in teaching
- A letter from the chair, dean or other senior individual in the candidate's unit describing the contributions to teaching, university or community service, research and scholarship, or other professional activity.
- A minimum of ten (10) and not more than fifteen (15) letters of support from colleagues and students, at least two or which are from colleagues. Include a statement explaining how the students were selected
Winning nominations will become public information and shared with the campus community. Candidates and nominators demonstrate their agreement to allow the packets to become public through the submission process. (The letters of support, individual course evaluations, and the candidate's vita are exempt from this public disclosure.)
Nomination Procedure:
The Committee requires submission through electronic format. These nominations should be in MS Word or pdf format, and should be emailed to the Senate office (senate@umsl.edu) no later than 5 pm on the deadline. In addition, one paper version of the nomination must be sent to the chair of the committee.
Deadline for Submission:
June 30, 2008 at 5 p.m. is the deadline for submission of nomination and completed materials packet.
