Since 2001 the campus has used the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to measure undergraduate student satisfaction. Originally the scores were much lower than at our comparator universities, so faculty and Student Affairs staff paid greater attention to increasing NSSE scores. Since that time, the campus has administered NSSE every other year.

Although we have not yet achieved our goal of meeting or exceeding the average for Urban Universities on each measure, over time UMSL's scores have increased.

A comparison of scores from the last administration of the survey with other public metropolitan research universities is in the Benchmark Comparisons Chart.
