In 2010 the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching designated the University of Missouri-St. Louis as a Community Engaged campus. UMSL was recognized for the depth and breadth of its institutional commitment to and engagement with the greater community. UMSL is one of 115 U.S. colleges and universities selected to receive the designation this academic year. This elective classification demonstrates how UMSL meets its mission to advance the welfare of its stakeholders and benefit the global society. According to Carnegie President Anthony Bryk, the classification "acknowledges significant commitment to and demonstration of community engagement…to improve teaching and learning and to generate socially responsive knowledge to benefit communities."
