MAUI-Utrecht Network Exchange Program

This program is part of the MAUI-Utrecht Network Exchange and is open to students from member institutions only. Interested students should contact their local study abroad coordinator regarding the application/placement process and for additional information. Application deadlines for all MAUI-Utrecht Network programs, including fall semester, winter semester, or academic year abroad, is in February. Spring semester placements may be available after the deadline: contact the Study Abroad Coordinator.

Examination Period(s) Each faculty has its own schedule. Examinations are based on course work, attendance and exams during the semester.
Orientation session(s) University-wide orientation and social introduction: a week before classes start/ in the first week of the semester. Exact date: not yet available. Faculty orientation dates may vary.

Course registration deadline(s) A preliminary course outline is required together with application. Most faculties email students on official course enrolment before the start of the semester
Language requirements English and/or Dutch.
Language test certificate required? Excellent knowledge of either ENGLISH or DUTCH is required.  A language proficiency report (enclosed with the application form) is compulsory if Dutch or English is not your native language. (Bachelor: IELTS score minimum: 6.0; TOEFL score minimum 83/220/560, Master: IELTS score minimum 6.5; TOEFL score minimum 93/237/580)
Preparatory language course for new exchange students (indicate date and costs) Yes. Intensive language course in August (also EILC). Special beginner's level course for exchange students ‘Boswell Welcome’ starts in September and February. Tuition fee! (Welcome course around €50.)

Internships available In general not. Sometimes there are possibilities for example: internships for students studying Dutch Language and Literature at their home university.
Student jobs available/allowed? Yes, but non-EU/EEA students require a work permit and are restricted a maximum of 10 hours per week OR 3 months  fulltime in the summer (June – August). The work permit must be applied for after the residence permit has been approved, which takes approximately two months.
Housing assistance YES, due to a large number of students and shortage of rooms it is usually very hard to find housing in Utrecht. Therefore Utrecht University offers guest students assistance with their housing through Short Stay Solutions. This independent housing corporation (SSH) makes housing arrangements upon request and under certain conditions. Information about the procedure will be sent to student after acceptance by UU.

Housing application deadline(s) The housing offer will be open for reservation 3 months before the semester/ academic year commences (beginning of June for Fall and beginning of November for Spring semester). Register as soon as possible, because rooms are allocated on first come first served basis.

Health facilities at the university Academic hospital, student psychological service. Students usually visit a general practitioner first. Upon arrival students receive information about doctors, dentists and pharmacies.

Other relevant information

Courses on both Bachelor’s and Master’s level are available for incoming exchange students.
Bachelor’s: students need at least an equivalent of 60 ECTS (one year of full time study).

Master’s: depending on student’s academic level, prerequisites (differs per faculty) and departmental approval.
Visa requirements

Exempted from applying for an Entry Visa (MVV) are students with a nationality from one of the EU/EEA countries, Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, the USA and Vatican City State.
For students from other countries, we will apply for an entry visa through a short procedure. After official acceptance students will be informed about necessary documents. Deadline: 3 months before arrival.

Legal administration fees: € 250 as of 2008
Residence Permit

Is required for all non-EU citizens staying in the Netherlands for a period longer than 3 months. UU organizes a special registration day in September and February.

Legal administration fees as of 2008:
students without MVV: € 433.
Students with MVV: € 188
Extending a students’ residence permit:  € 52.
