Examination Period(s) Fall Semester: Exams end December 12, 2008
Spring Semester: Exams end May 8, 2009
Orientation session(s) MANDATORY.  August 12th and 13th: students must arrive in Kansas City on or before August 11th for Fall Semester; early-January for Winter (exact date pending). $35USD fee.  Students must arrive in Kansas City at least one or two days prior to orientation.

Course registration deadline(s) Students will receive instructions once they have been accepted by UMKC; In some cases students will need to demonstrate pre-requisites. Students may be able to register online before coming to UMKC, as courses may fill up. Contact the Study Abroad Coordinator for more information.
Language requirements English, see requirements below.
Language test certificate required? In most cases, TOEFL test score required: result (minimum score of 500 for undergraduates, 550 for graduates); the IELTS may also be accepted OR, upon arrival at UMKC, take an English proficiency test at UMKC's Applied Language Institute. Please inquire for further details.
Preparatory language course for new exchange students Intensive English courses available during semester as required.
Internships available Possible. Arranged on an individual basis. Some internships are unpaid.
Student jobs available/allowed? On campus jobs are competitive – should apply early – may work up to 20 hours each week during studies.
Housing assistance On campus assistance available (see below).  Otherwise, very limited assistance available.
Housing options

Private lodging very difficult to find. Residence hall rooms on campus are furnished and typically shared by two, sometimes three, people. Kitchen facilities available on each floor; meal plan purchase is required: http://www.umkc.edu/housing/  We encourage you to live in the exciting International Living Learning Community (ILLC) where programming will be designed to focus on international issues and you will meet and live with American students interested in international students and activities. Contact Melissa Thomas for additional information on the ILLC.  Also available this year (no meal plan required) are the brand new Oak Place Apartments.

Housing: $560-900/month (may include required meal plan - see housing website for options)
Books and supplies: $900/semester

Comparable health insurance coverage from abroad allowed/not allowed All international students must buy the mandatory UMKC health insurance policy (approximately $100/month) unless they can show proof of coverage with comparable insurance and be granted an insurance waiver. The equivalent policy MUST meet Federal Insurance Guidelines, and the waiver must be requested at the intake appointment with International Student Affairs upon arrival at UMKC, and for each semester thereafter. Health facilities at the university Campus free health clinic and recreation center are available to students.
Other relevant information
Arrival assistance in Kansas City will be provided only if requested at least 2 weeks in advance and is only possible during certain days and hours. To facilitate transportation from airport, students should arrive for fall semester on August 10th or 11th and avoid arriving in Kansas City during nights and weekends if at all possible. Students have access to campus recreation center, computer labs, libraries, etc.
