Toyo University
University of Missouri-St. Louis Exchange Program in Japan
| Toyo University
An excellent program to immerse yourself in Japanese culture and truly learn the language. |
What is it like there?
Toyo
University was originally founded as a school of philosophy called
Tetsugakukan in 1887. In 1906, when the university was moved to its present
site in Tokyo, the name was changed to Toyo University. The University
has grown to consist of a graduate school, six undergraduate faculties,
a junior college and two affiliated high schools. Excluding high schools,
it has about 28,000 students, 525 faculty and 370 administrative staff.
UM-St. Louis students attend the Hakusan campus, which is centrally located
on the JR Loop in Tokyo.

What will I study?
Exchange students take a Japanese language and culture course Monday -
Friday for a total of 7.5 hours per week taught at the upper-beginner
and intermediate levels. In addition, students will take regular university
courses in the faculties of literature, economics, management, law, or
sociology, taught in English or Japanese (don't worry - there is special
consideration given to you as a non-native speaker!) See the website for courses taught in English or a combination of English and Japanese.
Students will also have a Japanese Language Exchange Partner (LEP) assigned to help with the transition and understand daily life in Japan.
What is the language of instruction?
Japanese and English.
Where will I live?
Toyo University places students in the new student residence, "I-House." It is conveniently located in downtown Tokyo and only a 15 minute walk from the campus. Rent is approximately 40,000 yen per month plus internet. More information on housing.
When can I go?
Students may go to Toyo for the Fall semester or academic year, although
the academic year is preferred.
