Tokyo Jogakkan College
University of Missouri-St. Louis Exchange Program in Japan
| Tokyo Jogakkan College
A bilingual liberal arts education for tomorrow's women leaders. |
What
is it like there?
Tokyo
Jogakkan College (TJKC) is a small, women's liberal arts college
located in the Tokyo suburb of Machida. Machida is a lively city with
all the amenities you'll need. Well served by trains, Machida is also
convenient for travel to other parts of Japan, especially to Tokyo
and to nearby mountains and beaches.
TJKC has a select student body of less than 500 undergraduates and class size is 10-20 student. In this intimate learning environment, students have the chance to do interactive learning, engage more closely with professors and participate easily in campus life. Such an environment fosters curiosity and confidence and encourages students to take an active role in shaping our shared college community.
TJKC is an ideal college for young women interested in learning Japanese language, culture, and the liberal arts. There are few Western students on campus, so you have to opportunity to be truly immersed in Japanese college life.
What
will I study?
UM-St. Louis students take Japanese language courses at the intermediate or advanced levels. UMSL students will take "Japan in the World" and "Japanese Arts and Culture" as directed studies courses, so the content can be tailored to the individual student's interests and major.
In addition to these core courses, there is a wide variety of classes taught in English or Japanese. Most classes are in general education, international relations, politics, women's studies, leadership, comparative cultures, anthropology, and sociology. Course catalogs are available in the Study Abroad Office, 261 MSC.
Students will also have a Japanese "buddy" assigned to help with the transition and general understanding of daily life in Japan.
What
is the language of instruction?
English and Japanese.
Where
will I live?
TJKC places students in affordable apartments that are near metro
stops with easy access to campus.
When
can I go?
Students may go to TJKC for the winter semester or academic year.
First semester at TJKC runs from around October 1 - February 15. Second semester runs from around April 1 - July 30.
What
are the eligibility requirements?
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, be a junior or senior.
A minimum of two semesters of Japanese is required, with four semesters
being highly recommended.
