Exchange Program in Germany
| Universität
Stuttgart
A six-week intensive German course prepares students to follow regular university courses in German during the semester. |
What
is it like there?
Stuttgart is situated along the Neckar River in a valley surrounded
by the Schwäbische Alb. The city traces its origins to a village
established about 950 AD. It was charted as a city in the 13th century
and in 1320 became the residence of the rulers of Wüttemberg.
Sister City to St. Louis, Stuttgart has grown to become home to more
than half a million people and is a major transportation, manufacturing
and publishing center, with companies such as Bosch and Daimler-Benz
headquartered here. Stuttgart is also famed for its many museums and
great artistic talent, such as the world renown Stuttgart Ballet,
the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Melos Quartet.
The University of Stuttgart was founded in 1829 and currently has about 19,000 students. More than 2,500 of these students are international students. The university offers 44 different majors in 14 different departments. The University of Stuttgart holds a leading position in both basic and applied research and is proud of its tradition of close co-operation with industry as well as with other research institutions such as the Fraunhofer-Society for Production Engineering, the Baden-Wüttemberg Materials Testing Centre and the German Aerospace Research Institute.
What
will I study?
Academic year students will arrive in September and Spring semester students will arrive in March for a six-week intensive language program (180 euro fee). The goal
is to rapidly bring students to the advanced level so they may follow
regular courses taught in German. Regular classes start in October or April.
Visit the website for a list of departments and course offerings.
Students may also take German as a Foreign Language classes during the regular semester. These coures listings are available here.
What
is the language of instruction?
German. Intensive prepartory language course is offered and German
language courses are available during the semester at the intermediate and advanced
levels.
Where
will I live?
Most of the dormitories, which are all mixed, are located on the
campus in Stuttgart-Vaihingen and on the campus of the Pädagogische
Hochschule (teachers training college) in Ludwigsburg. All dormitories
can be easily reached within 20 min. from the city centre campus
by S-Bahn (commuter train). The single bedrooms are equipped with
table, bed, chair, wardrobe/closet, bookshelf and a washbasin. There
is a common kitchen for all the members of an apartment or of a
floor. You must bring your own dishes with you or buy them in Germany.
There are also bathrooms and showers on each floor. Rent ranges from 220-300 euros per month.
When
can I go?
Because the academic calendar is different from the calendar at UMSL,
students may study abroad during the winter semester only or the entire
academic year.
Approximate Semester Dates:
Fall: September 1 - February 15
Winter: March 1 - July 20
