What is it like there?
The University of Sarajevo descends from centuries-long tradition of higher education in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are currently more than 55,000 students at the University. It has a decentralized structure, meaning that departments and schools operate as autonomous units under a loose university association.
What will I study?
The partnership between the University of Missouri-St. Louis and University of Sarajevo is new and developing. The majority of opportunities for students is limited by the student's knowledge of the host languages. With those language skills, students can easily take classes in most departments at the University of Sarajevo for which they qualify.
As the University of Sarajevo's website states: "The majority of courses and study programmes are in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (which is the same language with some minor regional variations) and candidate needs to have some level of knowledge of the host country’s language before arrival.
However, there are cases where complete study programmes are in English:
Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies
The Sarajevo Business School - undergraduate and postgraduate joint programmes of the School of Economics and Business Sarajevo and Griffith College Dublin, Faculty of Business)
or where some courses can be provided in English (since professors are willing to enable consultations, literature or exams in English).
Students have to explore these options individually. This is a very important step, since it will be one of the major considerations when candidates’ applications are evaluated by the host institution."
View the International Office page for more details.
Programs offered in English include journalism and visual media and business studies.
What is the language of instruction?
Bosnian. Currently, very few courses are taught in English, however, professors may be willing to teach in English in certain departments. Alternatively, if you have basic knowledge of Bosnian to follow the lectures, you could possibly take exams and write papers in English.
