Map of Taiwan

What is it like there?
National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) is a dynamic university, offering top quality education and research opportunities to those who study there. The two campuses of NTNU are situated in the downtown Taipei city. Having an active cultural and economic life, Taipei is a lively city with a population of 2,600,000. Taipei is still Chinese at heart, with an underlying current of traditional lifestyles and culture that makes it fascinating to everyone.

What will I study?
Comprehensive Chinese language and culture courses are offered at all levels at the Mandarin Training Center (MTC). Experienced instructors teach listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will enroll in a group language class for ten hours per week. This will be supplemented with an additional two to six hours per week of culture courses, including Chinese culture, calligraphy, culinary art, painting, and poetry.

Students proficient in Mandarin may enroll in regular university courses at NTNU.

What is the language of instruction?
Chinese and English. Language classes are available from beginning to advanced.

Where will I live?
Students may live in the NTNU dormitories. These are shared dorm rooms with 3-5 other students per room. Alternatively, students may live in nearby apartments that they must locate on their own. Upon arriving in Taipei, the MTC provides a list of recommended apartments. Most apartments are 3 bedrooms and are shared with other international students.

When can I go?
Students may attend the MTC during the fall semester, winter semester, or academic year. Many students choose to combine a summer quarter or session with the Fall quarter at the MTC. Dates below are approximate.

Summer Quarter: June 1 - August 31
Summer Session: July 1 - August 31
Fall Quarter: September 1 - November 30
Winter Quarter: December 1 - February 28
Spring Quarter: March 1 - May 31

What are the eligibility requirements?
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and be a sophomore, junior, or senior. Knowledge of Chinese language is not a prerequisite, but it is highly recommended students have at least one year of Chinese.
