Map of China

What is it like there?
Nanjing, formerly known in the West as Nanking, is one of China's greatest cities. Its name means "Southern Capital", as it was China's capital city until 1949 when Beijing became the capital. Today, Nanjing is a prosperous city, benefiting both from its proximity to Shanghai (just three hours by train), and from its gateway position on the Yangzi River , which stretches away west deep into China's interior. Nanjing offers a wealth of historic sites and accessible rail and bus travel to other parts of China.

Nanjing University is a comprehensive university. Founded in 1902, it is famous for its educational excellence and academic achievements. The original and main campus is located in the center of the ancient capital, on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Nanjing's scenery is beautiful and the city itself offers an excellent study environment with easy and convenient access to any part of the city.

What will I study?
Comprehensive Chinese language and culture courses are offered at all levels. Experienced instructors teach listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A variety of culture courses are also offered, including Chinese culture, calligraphy, painting, and poetry. More info on Chinese courses can be found on the Nanjing University website.

Business courses are taught in English each semester. This includes Global Human Resource Management and usually one or two other courses. Students with a sufficient level of Chinese may take regular courses at the university.

What is the language of instruction?
English and Chinese.

Where will I live?
Students have the option of living in the international student dormitory or renting an apartment in the private sector. The university provides placement in the dormitory; those students wanting an apartment must find one on their own.

Dormitory rooms are furnished and both single and double rooms are available. There are common bathrooms and cooking facilities on each floor, as well as internet cafe, laundry room, weight room, and ping pong tables. Each room includes air conditioning, a water heater, safety deposit box, telephone, TV, and internet portal. The dormitory is extremely clean and is a comfortable place to live. In 2008, prices range from 35 RMB/day per person (shared double room - approx. $150/month) to 80 RMB per day (large single room - approx. $350/month).

There are many Chinese, Western, Middle Eastern, Korean, and Japanese restaurants close to the dormitory, as well as markets.

When can I go?
Students may attend Nanjing University during the fall semester, winter semester, or academic year.

What are the eligibility requirements?
