University of Missouri-St. Louis Study Abroad Program in England
| Missouri
London Program
Study literature, politics, business, history, and a variety of other subjects in Central London. Spend a semester or a summer living, learning, and even interning in the the Capitol of the United Kingdom. |
What
is it like there?
London, of course, is the capital of England, and is very international
and cosmopolitan. History comes alive in the government buildings
and neighborhoods known throughout the world. A city of wonderful
museums, impressive galleries and an international flavor reflected
in the hundreds of ethnic restaurants and shops, London is easily
explored by "tube" (the subway), red busses and black
taxis. The Missouri London Program is an "island program:" students
study with American professors from different Missouri
universities and use the city as a resource and backdrop for coursework.
More information available on the Missouri London Program website.
What
will I study?
Missouri London Program (MLP)
Each semester there is a list of courses approved by UM-St. Louis departments
for credit in various fields, most often courses in the humanities and
social sciences (Shakespeare, British literature, history, politics, etc.).
Students take four courses, one of which is the required British Life
and Culture course which combines lecture/discussions of particular topics
with day trips to appropriate venues. For example, a discussion of archeology
will be followed by a trip to Stonehenge. Each course is three credits.
The courses available change each semester. Course listings are available
in 261 MSC or on this website.
Internship in London
Students may apply for an internship in London but all students must have approval and supervision of a faculty member from UM-St. Louis. The International Enrichment staff in London makes internship placements and no internships are guaranteed until the candidate interviews with the potential hiring agency (government office, business, not-for-profit etc.). Therefore internship applicants should be willing to participate in the regular academic program if a placement is not made.
If successful, an internship student takes one three credit course applicable to their internship, the three hour credit required British Life and Culture course and works at the internship for six hours credit. (Number of credit hours granted is dependent on UM-St. Louis departmental approval).
Internships are unpaid and usually require working four workdays each week for the duration of the Missouri London Program.
Additional required application materials for the internship program include: two employment references, three copies of a personal resume, three passport size photos and the internship interest application (available in 261 MSC).
Journalism
Internship Program
Students take British Life and Culture course, International Issues
Reporting, and intern for six credits. Applications for the Journalism
Internship Program must be approved by the coordinator at the University
of Missouri-Columbia. Minimum requirements for the journalism
internship include: 3.0 GPA, minimum of 3 journalism or mass communication
classes, relevant journalism or mass communication experience (internship
or part-time job), and a passion for completing an internship in
journalism or mass communication as evidence by a written essay
What
is the language of instruction?
English.
Where
will I live?
Accommodations are provided in student housing with two to six students
per room. Each room contains bunk beds, study desk and wardrobe. Most contain
kitchenettes and private bathroom. Other rooms share common facilities.
The accommodations are within walking distance of classes, held at Imperial
College in the Kensington area of London. Kensington High Street, Cromwell
Road and Gloucester Road shopping districts are close at hand with grocery,
laundry and dry cleaning shops, large department stores, intimate restaurants
and eating houses, boutiques, and antique dealers. All of London is easily
accessible by Underground service from nearby stations or by bus. Keep
in mind rooms are student rooms, i.e., small and not luxurious. The rooms
are not internet equipped.
When
can I go?
Students may attend the Missouri London program during the Fall,
Winter, or Summer semesters. MLP has two semesters, roughly at the
same time as UMSL semesters. There are also three, three-week sessions
during the summer. In summer a students takes one course per session
and may attend one, two or all sessions.
What
are the eligibility requirements?
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and be a freshman,
sophomore, junior, or senior. Students applying to the internship

MLP each semester and many returnees would be happy to talk with
you about the program.
How
much does it cost?

International Enrichment will bill students for the remainder of the fee, $6,400 (fall 2007). The International Enrichment program fee includes housing, social and cultural activities, guest lectures, subsidized course-related excursions, and orientation materials.
