University of Leipzig

The University of Leipzig was founded in 1409 which makes it one of the oldest universities in Europe. It has a student population of 16,700 and every tenth student is a foreigner.

Leipzig has a population of some 530,000 inhabitants and is a city of the state of Saxony. With its rich traditions and an optimistic future ahead of it, the town is a pleasant place to live. For 800 years Leipzig attracted many fairs and as a result it became a European trade centre. The town became filled with visitors from near and far.  Today, the Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Prof. Kurt Masur, the world-famous Thomaner Choir of the Thomas Church, the system of passage ways in the town centre, museums, theatres and the Nicolai Church are all symbols of cultural interest.

General information on the Academic System

All academic studies are basically divided into ŒGrundstudium‚ (basic studies) and ŒHauptstudium‚ (main studies). There are examinations usually after each period of study. The duration of these periods vary; Grundstudium usually ends after two years, Hauptstudium after an additional two or three years. There is no equivalent to a Bachelors degree as such. In some subjects the examinations after the basic studies test skills that are comparable to the ones that a Bachelors degree requires. Equivalent to a Masters degree are the titles that are obtained at a German university: ŒDiplom‚ (usually the degree obtained by science, engineering and economics students), ŒStaatsexamen‚ (the degree obtained by teachers, lawyers and doctors), ŒMagister‚ (Masters degree, humanities). Depending on the courses chosen by the students, the studies terminate either with a ŒStaatsexamen‚, ŒMagister‚ or ŒDiplom‚. At universities, studies can be continued after the ŒStaatsexamen‚ with postgraduate studies which lead to the ŒPromotion‚.
