What graduate programs are open to exchange students?  What are the conditions? Can advanced undergraduate exchange students take graduate level courses? Graduate courses are open to undergraduate students and students can be admitted at the graduate-level on a case-by-case basis, depending on their program of study and previous study levels.

Language requirements

TOEFL score of 57-57-57 paper-based or 23-23-23 computer-based with 4.5 or higher on the Test of Written English or 23-23-23 on the internet based test recommended. 
IELTS overall band score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6 on each section recommended.

Language test certificate required? Not for undergraduate students
Preparatory language course for new exchange students Upon arrival, all international students need to report to the Applied English Center for a language test. If the students are native speakers of English, hold a degree from an U.S. university, or fulfill the above-mentioned TOEFL or IELTS score, they will receive a waiver after a short interview. If students have not met the above referenced TOEFL or IELTS score minimums, or if they have not taken the TOEFL or IELTS, they will be required to take an English proficiency test upon arrival. Based on the exam results, students may be required to take one or more English courses during their first semester at KU, depending on their language proficiency. If that is the case, students will take another test at the end of the semester in order to determine whether they will be required to take further English classes in the spring.

Student jobs available/allowed? International students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week on campus.  Special restrictions might apply depending on scholarship regulations from students' home countries.

Housing options Students may live in double rooms in residence halls, in double rooms in Jayhawker Towers apartments (self-catering), or off campus in apartments or shared houses. There are some single residences available on campus, but availability is very limited. The Office of Study Abroad can offer only minimal assistance in locating off-campus housing.

Housing (double occupancy): Traditional Residence Halls - $3,804 per year. Renovated Residence Halls - $4,862-$5,544 per year depending on hall.

Jayhawker Towers: Traditional 2 bedroom apartment - $3,050 (4 residents per apartment) or $5,400 (2 residents per apartment). Renovated 2 bedroom apartment - $3,950 (4 residents per apartment) or $6,994 (2 residents per apartment).

Off-campus private rentals (estimates) monthly rent: $300- $600, depending on how many students share the apartment or house (Utilities:  $75-$120 per month).

Meal plans in dormitories: Range from $2,860-$3,882 per year depending on the plan and number of meals included.  Students living in residence halls are required to choose a meal plan whereas students living in Jayhawker Towers have the option of choosing a meal plan since each apartment has its own kitchen. 

Meals:  $200- $300 per month if prepared at home

 
Books and supplies:  $350- $450 per semester depending on the field of study
KU Health Insurance $451 per semester
Comparable health insurance coverage from abroad allowed/not allowed Students must have health insurance with a minimum coverage of $100,000 per person, per each sickness or accident.  More specific information will be sent with the application for admission.
Health facilities at the university Watkins Health Center: provides students with all kinds of medical services, including regular physicians (including gynecology, urology, physical therapy), pharmacy, and lab.  Many services are very inexpensive for full-time students.
Other relevant information Undergraduate students must verify that funds are available in the minimum amount of $5,665 per semester, $11,329 for the year: 2011-2012 cost of attendance. (Subject to change in May 2012).

We ask that the overseas contact coordinates the application process, reviews the completed application and sends it to the KU Office of Study Abroad with a brief note of nomination for the exchange.  Students should please not send the application directly.

Undergraduates may enroll in a maximum of 15 undergraduate credit hours per semester.  Students will be responsible to pay for any additional credit hours.
