Universidad Iberoamericana
University of Missouri-St. Louis Exchange Program in Mexico
| Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA)
Take a semester of Spanish language and culture or follow regular courses taught in Spanish. An ideal program for students who enjoy a suburban environment to learn Spanish. |
What
is it like there?
The Universidad
Iberoamericana is a private Jesuit institution open to all faiths
and nationalities and was founded in 1943 with a School of Philosophy
and Literature. In 1988, the University moved to its new, modern campus
in the Santa Fe area in the western part of Mexico City. Santa Fe
is a modern, safe suburbl located 10 miles west of downtown on the way to Toluca.
The University now has over 10,500 students of which 800 are enrolled in postgraduate studies. There are approximately 1,900 members in the faculty which ensures that students benefit from the advantages of more personal attention. Departments include: Art, Sciences, Religious Sciences, Political and Social Sciences, Economy, Philosophy, Physics and Mathematics, History, Literature, Business Administration, Accounting, Architecture, Urban Studies and Design, Communication, Law, Education and Human Development, International Relations, Engineering, Psychology and Health..
What
will I study?
Each student will take a Spanish placement test before going to
UIA. Students at the beginning and intermediate levels follow the
Spanish Language and Latin American Culture program which includes
formal Spanish learning with two hour classes Monday-Friday. It
is recommended that these students also take eight Friday field
trips to points of cultural interest in Mexico City (the cost of
three fieldtrips is included in the tuition). There are 180 classroom
instruction hours in the daily Spanish classes and 24 hours of field
trip time in the workshop course. Students would take two other
complementary courses in this program in different areas such as
art, history, literature, and political, economic, and social analysis.
These courses are taught by bilingual teachers competent in their
academic fields.
If a student scores at the advanced level of the Spanish Placement Test, he/she may take classes in the regular departments and/or also participate in the Spanish Language and Latin American Culture Program. Please see the instructions here to find course listings and descriptions.
What
is the language of instruction?
English and/or Spanish.
Where
will I live?
Students are placed in Mexican family homestays. This is an excellent
way to immerse yourself in Mexican lifestyle and language. The fee
for homestay includes a shared room and bathroom. It does NOT include
meals or laundry. Prepared meals, use of the kitchen, and use of
laundry facilities can be negotiated with the housemother. Meals
are also available in the campus cafeteria. Host families are carefully
screened and your preferences are taken into consideration when
matching you with a family.
More information on housing here.
When
can I go?
Students may attend for the fall semester, winter semester, academic
year, or summer session.
What
are the eligibility requirements?
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and be a
junior, or senior.
