Description and Objectives
Greece and Greek culture have exercised a tremendous influence on European and North American civilization.
The Academic Program in Greece is a wonderful educational and cultural experience, offering to students the opportunity to study in Greece through a semester-long curriculum combining regular classes, field trips, and independent studies. The Program is open for credit to students from any university, provided they have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Students can register for 12-15 credit hours of courses on various aspects of Greek Civilization (history, archaeology, ancient and modern language, culture, anthropology, art, etc.). Accommodations and Travel
For the duration of the Program, students will be accommodated in comfortable, fully furnished apartments in Athens or at the best possible venue if a trip requires an overnight stay. Accommodations as well as all travel sponsored by the Program are included in the fees (see below). Students are responsible for their own airfare and travel to Athens.
When can I go?
The Semester in Greece program is offered during the Spring 2010 semester. The 2010 Program dates are February 4 - May 1, 2010. Students will be based in Athens and participate in the program-sponsored field trips around Greece.
Academic Content and Courses
The Program has two components:
- In-Class Teaching: Regular classes in the Program's facilities in Athens during the dates specified. All students are required to take the core courses—The Life and Culture of Modern Greece and The Culture and Civilization of Ancient Greece.

- On-Site and In-Museum Lectures: Visits to the main sites and museums in Greece, with on-site and in-museum lectures; these will be held concurrently with the regular classes. The following fieldtrips are planned: Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Sounion, Eleusis, Amphiareion, Marathon, Island of Aegina, Island of Hydra, Eretria, Khalkis, Delphi and Mt. Parnassus, Ancient Olympia, Mycenae, Nafplion and the Argolid, Pylos and Messenia

Financial Aid / Scholarships
UMSL Students can utilize their financial aid towards the program. Scholarships are also available for UMSL students. For non-UMSL participants, please check with your university’s Financial Aid Office and Study Abroad Office for more details.
Residence Visa
It is not required for students staying less than 90 days to obtain a residence visa in Greece. However, if students wish to spend more time in Greece before or after the Program, they MUST obtain one. It is the student’s responsibility to apply for the visa. Please contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Greece for detailed information and application requirements (http://www.greekembassy.org/).

How do I apply?
Students will need to submit the following documents to the Study Abroad
Office by October 15 or the program is full. Forms are available online (below)
or in the Study Abroad Office, 261 MSC.
1. Semester in Greece Application Form
2. One letter of reference
3. Transcript (UMSL students: use study abroad transcript request form)
4. Two passport size photos
5. $500 non-refundable deposit, which goes towards program fees (deposit refunded only if not accepted into program)
6. UMSL Students: Scholarship application and scholarship essay
Upon your acceptance to the program, additional forms will be mailed or emailed to you. You will need to complete and return them to the Study Abroad Office in a timely manner. The balance of fees ($8600) is due January 11, 2010
**All students from other participating MO Greece member campuses—University of Missouri-Kansas City, Missouri Central State University, Missouri Southern State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Missouri University for Science & Technology, and Truman State University—should apply directly through their home campuses.

How much does it cost?
Below are the Spring 2010 estimated costs for one semester (3 months) for the Semester in Greece program. When you participate in the Semester in Greece program, you continue to pay UMSL tuition and may use your financial aid. In addition, both CIS and external scholarships are available to qualified students.

1 Program fees include:
- 12 credits educational fees. Students taking more than 12 credits will be charged at the UMSL rate.
- Acccommodation during the dates of the Program (February 4-May 1, 2010)
- All program-sponsored field trips to archaeological sites and museums
- Entrance fees to sites and museums
- Orientation activities
- Use of the Program's facilities, including computer lab (with free-of-charge internet access), student lounge, and library
- Individual cellular telephones for each student (they must be returned at the end of the program. Telephone charges will be paid by the students)
- Extra-curricular activities (lectures, dinners, parties, excursions, theater shows, cooking and dancing lessons, etc.)
- Sickness & accident insurance through HTH Worldwide
2 Includes transportation, ISIC, and Greek Residence Permit (not required for students staying less than 90 days).
3 Please note that expenses are ESTIMATES. Costs vary depending on the exchange rate, the inflation rate, individual spending habits, and amount of extra travel. The cost estimate above does not include personal expenses or independent travel, which vary widely from student to student.
