What is it like there?
Bremen's history goes back over 1,200 years. Located on the River Wester, it has a beautiful waterfront and lively cosmopolitan feel. The Two-City-State of Bremen lies in the north of Germany and is an important center for the North-West German region. Bremen and Bremerhaven have a population of 681,000 inhabitants.  Bremen tourism information.

The Hochschule Bremen University of Applied Sciences (Bremen UAS) is a state institution of higher education. It has the academic status of a Fachhochschule, a university of applied studies in the areas of design, business administration and economics, engineering, social service, and nautical science. The Hochschule Bremen has an enrollment of about 7,000 students. There are nine departments and 23 degree courses. The Department of Business is the largest of the nine departments, with an enrollment of about 2,500 students. 

What will I study?
UMSL students may take classes at the Bremen UAS School of International Business. They offer a number business and international-related courses taught in English each semester. Please click here for a current list.

What is the language of instruction?
German and English. German language courses are available.

What is the Study & Internship Program (SIP)?
Study & Internship Program is a one-year program for US and Canadian students. It offers semester study at Bremen UAS followed by a paid (500 euros/month) six-month internship. It is sponsored by a consortium of German universities of applied science and the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). Participants are provided with free accommodation, a 3-week German intensive class, student mentors, and organized cultural and recreational activities. Please see the website for full details. There is a separate application for this program that is due by March 1. Please coordinate your application with the UM-St. Louis study abroad office.

Where will I live?
Bremen UAS offers student residence halls. You can live in a single apartment or shared flat, and rent ranges from 250-300 Euros per month.

When can I go?
Because the academic calendar is different from the calendar at UMSL, students may study abroad during the winter semester only or the entire academic year.

Approximate Semester Dates:
Fall: September 1 - February 15
Winter: March 1 - July 20

Bremen UAS also offers a summer intensive language program.


What are the eligibility requirements?
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a business-related major or minor. A minimum of two semesters of German is strongly recommended.

How much does it cost?
Below are the 2009-2010 estimated costs for one semester (4 months) at Bremen UAS compared to a semester at UM-St. Louis. When you participate in a UM-St. Louis exchange program, like Bremen UAS, you continue to pay UMSL tuition and may use your financial aid. In addition, both CIS and external scholarships are available.

Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation:
