Bochum has a population of some 400,000 inhabitants and is situated in the Ruhr-area, the economic nerve center of western Germany. It is a very vivid city with a lot of cultural and sportive activities, complemented by the large student population.
Being an industrial town historically, Bochum still has a lot of parks and green spots. The University is located at the border of a little valley, not far from a lake: 'Kemnader See.' The cultural scene in Bochum is quite unique. Bochum has one of Germany's best known theaters and there are various museums.
Language Requirements
The main language of instruction at the University of Bochum is German, therefore a good command of German is necessary.
The
Ruhr-Universität offers an orientation course before the beginning
of each semester, in March and in September. It consists of a German
language course (16 per week) and a supplementary program with excursions,
special lectures and guided tours. During the whole semester, German
language courses on several levels are offered for international
students. There is also a semi official German language course based
on a private initiative by 'ASTA' (the student's committee). The
ASTA course takes place during the term and is free of charge.
For further information, contact the ŒAkademisches Auslandsamt‚.
