What is it like there?uao
Barcelona is the second city of Spain, and the capital of the
Region of Catalonia. Its location, close to France, has made the Spanish city more opened to European influences.

The city's two thousand year history has left its mark in its
architectural, artistic and cultural heritage. Its excellent
international communications, its Mediterranean climate and
its cultural atmosphere make it a privileged city indeed.
Barcelona, the southernmost port of Europe, has seen how
Romans, Arabs, Christians and other civilizations have left their mark. Streets and squares are full of monuments and sculptures, both classic and Mediterranean, evidence of a great passion for art that makes Barcelona an open-air museum.

What will I study?
Communications, Journalism, Media Studies. The Abat Oliba CEU University in Barcelona offers an International Degree in Journalism Studies, with 50% of its courses in English. Studying Journalism at the UAO provides an understanding of the essentials of journalism production, not only in the specific courses imparted throughout the academic program, but from the very beginning through radio, television, photojournalism and digital journalism workshops.

What is the language of instruction?
Spanish. Journalism is the only course bilingual (Spanish and English)

Where will I live?
The Abat Oliba CEU University in Barcelona does not have an acommodation office, but they can provide information on local residences. Students typically share apartments and more common housing agencies in the Barcelona area include Barcelona Housing Service for Students and Loquo Barcelona Community.

When can I go?
Students may go to Abat Oliva CEU for the spring semester or academic year due to the differences in academic calendars.

Academic Calendar:
Fall Semester:  From early September to late-January
Spring Semester:  From early-February to early June

What are the eligibility requirements?
Students must meet all UMSL Study Abroad eligibility requirements, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, and be a sophomore, junior, or senior.

How much does it cost?
Below are the 2011-2012 estimated costs for one semester at Universitat Abat Oliba CEU compared to a semester at UM-St. Louis. When you participate in a UMSL exchange program you continue to pay UMSL tuition and may use your financial aid. In addition, both CIS and external scholarships are available.

Please note that the Spanish government may require students to apply in person for the student visa. This means you must go to the Spanish Consulate in Chicago approximately 1-2 months before departure.
