This program is part of the MAUI-Utrecht Network Exchange and is open to students from member institutions only. Interested students should contact their local study abroad coordinator regarding the application/placement process and for additional information. Application deadlines for all MAUI-Utrecht Network programs, including fall semester, winter semester, or academic year abroad, is in late February/early March. The University of Antwerp has a student population of 13,000 spread over 4 campuses: campus City, campus Middelheim, campus Groenenborger and campus Drie Eiken.  The city campus is situated in the old historic city centre while the other three campuses are situated in the leafy suburbs to the south of the city.

Academic calendar

The academic year is divided in 2 semesters. Each semester comprises 13 weeks of lecturing concluded by a 4 week examination period. Exchange students are requested to arrive a few days in advance in order to arrange for accommodation or to handle their formalities (registration with the host town, registration with the University of Antwerp). It is compulsory that students attend the orientation days which are held before the start of each semester.
Autumn semester 2012-2013:

Exam period: 7 January – 1 February
Christmas break: 24 December – 4 January

Application materials on the website or paper copies only?

All forms are available on the website of the international relations office. An electronic application package is sent to all partner universities AND to the students, once they have been nominated.

Course registratoin deadline(s)

Students have to return a preliminary study programme (cfr. ECTS  Learning agreement) before the application deadline. Course registration is done at the beginning of each semester with the departmental secretariat.

Language requirements

Dutch: The language of instruction in Flanders is Dutch. Hence, most undergraduate courses at UA are taught in Dutch only. In order to attend the courses successfully, it is highly recommended that students  sign up for the intensive Dutch language course organised before the start of each semester. Professors often allow international students to take their examinations in English. Research and/or library work can be done in English (and French).
English: Some faculties organise a full programme or a selected number of courses in English to accommodate international students (see below). However a sound knowledge of English is required when studying in one of these programs.

Language test is not compulsory but recommended.

Preparatory language course for incoming students

An intensive Dutch language course for exchange students is organised at the beginning of each semester. Several levels are offered. Exchange students can apply for a voucher with the International Relations Office, which entitles them to pay the reduced rate for exchange students: € 75 for the 45-hours courses, € 100 for 60-hours courses and € 135 for 90-hours courses.

Courses taught in English

Health facilities at the university

Students can consult a general practitioner on each campus from Monday to Friday. A psychologist can be consulted upon request. For other specific needs concerning health and judicial problems students can contact the Office for Student Affairs on campus.

Summer courses available?

In July and September the university language centre ‘LINGUAPOLIS’ organises 1-month immersion courses in Dutch, English, French and Spanish.
Conversation training in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian is offered in early July for students with a basic knowledge of the language (15 hours).
