their local study abroad coordinator regarding the application/placement
process and for additional information. Application deadlines
for all MAUI-Utrecht Network programs, including fall semester, winter
semester, or academic year abroad, is in late February/early March. Spring semester
placements may be available after the deadline: contact your Study
Abroad Coordinator.

The University of Antwerp has a student population of 13,000 spread over 4 campuses: campus City, campus Middelheim, campus Groenenborger and campus Drie Eiken. The city campus is situated in the old historic city centre while the other three campuses are situated in the leafy suburbs to the south of the city.
Location
Antwerp is the largest city in Flanders and is home to about 470.000 inhabitants. The city is well known for its harbour and diamond industry, historical past, contemporary art and fashion designers. More information on the city: http://www.antwerpen.be.

| Academic calendar | The academic year is divided in 2 semesters. Each semester comprises 13 weeks of lecturing concluded by a 4 week examination period. Exchange students are requested to arrive a few days in advance in order to arrange for accommodation or to handle their formalities (registration with the host town, registration with the University of Antwerp). It is compulsory that students attend the orientation days which are held before the start of each semester. Spring semester 2012-2013: |

| Language requirements | Dutch: The language of instruction in Flanders is Dutch. Hence, most undergraduate courses at UA are taught in Dutch only. In order to attend the courses successfully, it is highly recommended that students sign up for the intensive Dutch language course organised before the start of each semester. Professors often allow international students to take their examinations in English. Research and/or library work can be done in English (and French). |

| Preparatory language course for incoming students | An intensive Dutch language course for exchange students is organised at the beginning of each semester. Several levels are offered. Exchange students can apply for a voucher with the International Relations Office, which entitles them to pay the reduced rate for exchange students: € 75 for the 45-hours courses, € 100 for 60-hours courses and € 135 for 90-hours courses. |
