Academic calendar

The academic year is divided into 2 semesters. Examinations are organised at the end of each term. Exchange students are requested to arrive a few days before the semester starts, in order to arrange their accommodation, registration, residence permit and other formalities. It is compulsory that students attend the orientation day which is held before the start of each semester.

Language requirements

Dutch: The language of instruction in Flanders is Dutch. Hence, most undergraduate courses at UA are taught in Dutch only. In order to attend the courses successfully, we highly recommend students to sign up for the intensive Dutch language course that is organised at the beginning of each semester. Most professors allow foreign students to take their examinations in English. Additional library work/research is mostly in English (or French).

English: Some faculties organise a programme or a number of courses in English to accommodate international students (see below). A sound knowledge of English is required when studying at in one of these programmes.

An intensive Dutch language course for exchange students is organised at the beginning of each semester. Several levels are available. Exchange students can apply for a voucher with the International Relations Office, which entitles them to pay the reduced rate for exchange students: € 40 for courses of 15h, € 50 for courses of 30h, € 65 for courses of 45h, € 85 for courses of 60h and € 100 for courses of 90h.
Courses taught in English

The faculty of Law offers the International and European Legal Studies Programme (IELSP) for one or two semesters. Courses and seminars focus mainly on European, international and comparative law. http://www.ua.ac.be/IELSP

The faculty of Applied Economic Sciences offers a range of courses and seminars in English. Some are organized exclusively for international students while others are open to Flemish and international students. The faculty of Political and Social Sciences offers a selected number of courses in English in each of their degrees.

Health facilities at the university Students can consult a general practitioner on each campus from Monday to Friday. A psychologist can be consulted upon request. For other specific needs concerning health students can contact the Social Service on each campus.

The University of Antwerp has 4 campuses: campus City, campus Middelheim, campus Groenenborger and campus Drie Eiken.  The city campus is situated in the old historic city centre while the other three campuses are situated in the leafy suburbs to the south of the city.

Summer courses available?

In July and September the university language centre ‘LINGUAPOLIS’ organises 1-month immersion courses in Dutch, English, French and Spanish.
Conversation training in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian is offered in early July for students with a basic knowledge of the language (15 hours).
