Academic calendar

The academic year is divided into 2 semesters. Each semester comprises 13 weeks of lecturing concluded by a 4 week examination period. Exchange students are requested to arrive a few days in advance in order to arrange for accommodation (in case they didn't book a room in advance) or to handle formalities (registration with the host town, registration with the University of Antwerp…). It is compulsory that students attend the orientation days which are held before the start of each semester.

Application material on the web site or paper copies only. All forms are available on the website of the international relations office. An electronic application package is sent to all partner universities AND to the students, once they have been announced.
Course registration deadline(s) Students have to return a preliminary study programme (cfr. Learning Agreement) before the application deadline. Course registration is done at the beginning of each semester with the departmental secretariat.
Language requirements

Dutch: The language of instruction in Flanders is Dutch. Hence, most undergraduate courses at UA are taught in Dutch. In order to attend the courses successfully, it is highly recommended that students sign up for the intensive Dutch language course which is organised at the beginning of each semester. Professors often allow international students to take their examinations in English. Research and/or library work can be done in English (and French).

English: Several faculties organise a full programme or a selected number of courses in English to accommodate international students (see below). However a sound knowledge of English is required when studying in one of these programmes.

An intensive Dutch language course for exchange students is organised at the beginning of each semester. Several levels are available. Exchange students can apply for a voucher with the International Relations Office, which entitles them to attend the language course at a reduced rate for exchange students: € 30 for courses of 15h, € 70 for courses of 45h, € 85 for courses of 60h and € 115 for courses of 90h.

Health facilities at the university Students can consult a general practitioner on each campus from Monday to Friday. A psychologist can be consulted upon request. For other specific needs concerning health and judicial problems students can contact the Office for Student Affairs on campus.

The University of Antwerp has a student population of 13,000 spread over 4 campuses: campus City, campus Middelheim, campus Groenenborger and campus Drie Eiken.  The city campus is situated in the old historic city centre while the other three campuses are situated in the leafy suburbs to the south of the city.

In July and September the university language centre ‘LINGUAPOLIS’ organises 1-month immersion courses in Dutch, English, French and Spanish.
Conversation training in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian is offered in early July for students with a basic knowledge of the language (15 hours).
