Stuttgart Summer University

Stuttgart is the cultural centre of the State of Baden-Württemberg with a wealth of theatres and concert halls. It is also the home of the world-famous ballet and there are museums and art galleries as well as academies of music and art. At one of the music halls you can enjoy famous musicals like "Das Phantom der Oper" or "42nd Street". Since the nieneties of the last century Stuttgart has become the centre for German Hip Hop. Numerous discos and music clubs are spread all over the city.
Stuttgart is also one of the most important business locations and industrial centres in Germany. Many of Germany's renown companies like Mercedes-Benz and Bosch have factories here. In addition, there are numerous smaller companies involved in the production of machine tools, textiles and clothes, precision instrumtents, food and luxury items. There are also companies that specialize in woodworking, leather processing and making shoes or musical instruments as well as a number of large breweries. There is also a small paper and chemical industry.
The University of Stuttgart will organise housing with host families or in a student dorm. Most families live within 30 minutes commuting time from the university.
Subject Courses: these will be taught in the afternoons and will have integrated excursions. These excursions are mandatory.

German Language: classes will be from 8.30 to 12.15 on Mondays to Fridays. You will be placed in an appropriate class based on your performance in a Placement Test administered upon arrival.
German Language Courses
Over the six week period, the total number of contact hours in any one German Language Course is 90. This is equivalent to 9 ECTS credits.Elementary Courses
These courses stress correct pronunciation, oral comprehension, and simple speaking ability, and lead to active mastery of basic grammar and limited reading ability.
Elementary German I
Course Description:
- Basic grammar and structures of German
- Elementary vocabulary
- Everyday situations in your studies and at home
- Starting and continuing written and oral communication
Elementary German II
This course is a combination of an Elementary German I course and a Conversation Course. It will cover the basic skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) with a heavy emphasis on everyday German.
Prerequisite: Elementary German I or equivalent
Course Description:
- Further development of the written and oral language and communication skills from Elementary German I
- Basic structures of German (continued)
- Everyday situations in your studies and at home
- Introduction to tourist and professional situations
- Transition from word to sentence level grammar
These courses lead to a greater competence in spoken language and to more advanced reading skills.
Prerequisite: Elementary German II or equivalent
Intermediate German I
This course aims to help you improve and expand your knowledge of the basics of German.
Course Description:
- Further development of language and communication skills from Elementary German II
- Networking language skills
- Focus on syntax and text grammar
- Further types of topical texts from university and professional contexts
- Communication skills including fluency and flexibility
- Special focus on oral communication (discussing, reproting, presenting)
Excursions: A number of optional excursions will be offered. The excursions will be on Saturdays, respectively on the weekend. You will, however, have ample opportunity to organise your long-weekend trips to other cities such as Berlin or Paris, should you desire.
