Summer Program in South Africa
This program will not be available in Summer 2010. It might be available again in Summer 2011. Dates and prices will be similar to the previous summer. Availability and new information will be posted in December 2010.
Earn 6 credit hours through this exciting 4-week program based in Cape Town at the University of Western Cape (UWC) in South Africa. Under the direction of Prof. Sheilah Clarke-Ekong and Prof. Richard White, students will participate in an enriching educational and cultural experience with other UWC students. The program is sponsored by the four campuses of the UM System (UMSL, UMKC, UMC, and MST).
The 2009 summer program combines academic coursework with excursions throughout South Africa. The trip includes a 2-night stay in Kruger National Park, where students will learn about the ecology and environment of South Africa while witnessing the diverse wildlife and impressive historical and archaeological sights of the region. Classes will also cover contemporary perspectives on women in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Students will earn six credit hours.

Anthro 3235 or WGS 3350: Women in Sub-Saharan Africa

June 13 - July 10, 2009.
Group travel to South Africa is mandatory and included in the program cost. Students may change their return flight to extend their stay at their own cost.
Estimated Costs:
UMSL Tuition: $1,546.80 (6 credits. 2008 rate; summer 2009 rate TBA in April.)
Program Fee*: $3500
*This cost is an estimate and may be revised. It includes roundtrip airfare from St. Louis, food and lodging in Cape Town except for lunches, all meals and lodging on the field trip to Kruger, all transportation and admission fees, textbooks/materials, visa fees, and health insurance. Does not include personal expenses or passport costs.
* UMSL reserves the right to revise the program fee if there are fluctuations in the exchange rate. Participants are responsible for any increase in rates.
Application Process:
Students will need to submit the following documents to the Study Abroad
Office. Forms are available online
or in the Study Abroad Office, 261 MSC. Application and non-refundable
deposit of $500 are due by March 9 , 2009.
Remaining program fee payment schedule to be announced. Tuition ONLY may be billed to your UMSL student account; the program fees are payable by check or money order.

Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation:
Faculty-led program participants are required to complete the online study abroad orientation, which covers health and safety topics, culture shock, and much more. Participants may or may not have to attend an in-person orientation; you will be notified by the program coordinator via e-mail regarding the specific requirements for your program. Non-UM-St. Louis students residing in the St. Louis area are welcome to attend. Please notify the Study Abroad Office if you will be attending so that we may send you a parking permit and directions.

FEES
There are two fees for faculty-led programs: program fee and tuition/technology fee. Each fee must be paid separately.
1. Program fees must be paid by check or money order made out to UMSL and sent or brought to the
Study Abroad Office. Credit cards are NOT accepted for program fees.
2. Tuition/technology fees will be billed to your student account by the Cashier’s Office after registration is complete. Non-UMSL credit participants will be notified via e-mail by the Study Abroad Office as to how they can make payments online or through the Cashier’s Office.
N.B. If not participating for credit, the non-credit fee is payable by check made out to UMSL and must be sent to the Study Abroad Office.
REGISTRATION
Registration Instructions will be sent to you via e-mail by the Study Abroad Coordinator. DO NOT TRY TO REGISTER WITHOUT RECEIVING INFORMATION FROM THE STUDY ABROAD OFFICE ABOUT THE CORRECT PROCEDURE FOR YOUR PROGRAM.
