World History since 1500 and the Remarkable Career of England (3 credits) This introductory survey of the history of humankind since 1500 emphasizes the rise of the West and the growing interdependence of the world’s different political, economic, and social systems. Perhaps no history better reflects these twin themes than does the history of Great Britain, which we will examine carefully, with its rise as an industrial and imperial power and later transformation into a modern nation. Of especial interest here will be the emergence of London as a world city. There will be lectures, readings, and films, but the highlight of the course will be field trips to London’s museums and sites of historic and cultural interest as well as several walking tours. These trips will include the Houses of Parliament, the Imperial War Museum, the British Museum, Charles Dickens’ London, and the Port of London.
What is it like there? London, of course, is the capital of England, and is very international and cosmopolitan. History comes alive in the government buildings and neighborhoods known throughout the world. A city of wonderful museums, impressive galleries and an international flavor reflected in the hundreds of ethnic restaurants and shops, London is easily explored by "tube" (the subway), red busses and black taxis. The Missouri London Program, run by CAPA, is an "island program"; students study with U.S. professors from different Missouri universities and use the city as a resource and backdrop for coursework.
Accomodations: Students will live in apartments in central London (referred to as flats in the UK) in multi-bedded rooms that include bedroom and study furniture. Linens are provided but students should bring their own towels with them from home. You will have a shared kitchen available within the building so you can cook your own meals. Basic cooking utensils are provided. All flats are easily accessible by Underground ("tube") service from nearby stations or by bus. Details can be found on the CAPA Accommodation page.
