Spaces still available. Please contact Jenny Bazzetta at bazzettaj@umsl.edu or 314-516-6983.
The Criminal Justice Studies program in Germany will consist of an 18-day stay in two German states (Laenders): Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz) and Bavaria (Freistaat Bayern).
This summer study tour is designed as an introduction to German culture, using the justice system as a focal point. Lectures during the first half of the tour will introduce students to the German justice system while the second half of the tour will consist of a joint seminar with German students. Topics to be discussed during the joint seminar include restorative justice, youth violence, and the role of comparative criminology in contemporary criminology. There are no prerequisites and participation is open to all interested in learning about German culture. Knowledge of German is not necessary – all lectures and tours are conducted in English. Tours include cultural and historical field trips to:
- Historic cities, including Heidelberg, Munich, Dresden, Passau, Strasbourg, and Prague;
- Castles, including the Bavarian King’s castles;
- Cathedrals;
- Dachau concentration camp;
- Criminal justice agencies, including police units, prisons, and training facilities;
- And much more.
Prof. Elmar Weitekamp and Prof. Dr. Hans-Juergen Kerner from the Institute of Criminology located at Eberhard Karls University of Tuebingen will accompany the students, as will Prof. Finn Esbensen of UMSL. Activities, classes, site visits, guest lectures are planned for every day, including the weekends. Students are typically in the classroom, on-site, or traveling to the site 8-12 hours per day. Even when traveling, faculty members will provide lectures and commentaries on the day’s topics.
