The University: A business school created in 1909, ESSCA (Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Commerciales d'Angers) is a member of the prestigious "Conférence des Grandes Ecoles," the association of top Business Schools in France. The main campus of the ESSCA Group is situated in the city of Angers in the famous Loire valley region of France with sister campuses in Paris, Budapest (Hungary), and Cholet. ESSCA has approximately 2,800 students in a city which has a total student population of 30,000.

Academics: Exchange students can choose cultural classes on French society taught in French. Courses in English are limited; students enrolling in the French language program will have more course options.

Housing: Students will live in the student residence, UniverCity, in the Angers city center. This residence is available for both international and French students and has easy access to a direct bus line to ESSCA. Students may choose from studio apartments or 3/4 bedroom apartments, each with a private bath. Prices range from 160 euros/month to 564 euros/month. The rent includes utilities, internet, and English-speaking staff on site. 

Activities and Programs: ESSCA's international office offers a wide variety of services for exchange students, including a welcome team to greet you at the train station and residences and help with opening bank accounts, buying travel cards, etc.. They also provide an incoming orientation, host a "Welcome Day," and can offer individual academic advice through a tutor system. Throughout the semester, the United Cultures team organizes social events and activities which help integrate international students with French students.


Location: Angers is a beautiful green city, situated in the west of France, 90 minutes from Paris and 60 minutes from the spectacular beaches of the Atlantic coast. It is an historical city with the world's oldest medieval tapestry and timbered houses, cobbled streets and a unique 12th century fortress. Angers has a small-town feel that makes a great atmosphere for French immersion, while being large enough to always have something to do. It is a university town that has a modern and lively city with a conference centre and many theatres, cinemas and bars. Ranked in 2006 as France's 2nd most business-friendly city, it is also a very student-friendly city, with lots of activities and entertainment. And some of France's most beautiful countryside and chateaux along the banks of the famous river Loire are to be found within a day's train, bus or car journey.

Please note that the French government requires students to apply in person for the student visa. This means you must go to the French Consulate in Chicago approximately 1-2 months before departure. 

Course Equivalencies: Each student is responsible for researching what courses are available to take and for obtaining an UMSL equivalent course. The UMSL equivalent course number is the course for which you will receive credit on your UMSL transcript. Finding courses to take while you are abroad requires some time and research. Upon Acceptance:

 Students will be required to submit supplemental materials, purchase HTH insurance, and participate in a mandatory orientation. More information will be distributed to all accepted students.

* UMSL tuition fees are based on 12 undergraduate credit hours at the 2013/14 rate - 2014/15 tuition rate TBA April 2014. Non-resident fees may apply.

* Please note that expenses are ESTIMATES. Costs vary depending on the exchange rate, the inflation rate, individual spending habits, and amount of extra travel. The cost estimate above does not include visa expenses, personal expenses, independent travel, which vary widely from student to student.
