First Year Assessment

The first-year assessment plan is a growing plan to assist in collecting data from students at various points throughout their first year. The intent is to provide student behavior related to the matriculation process, student satisfaction, student success both personally and academically, and to measure the impact on student retention and other programs. The plan helps to inform the institution on the things we were learning about from our students and their experiences.

Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE)

National survey that collects data about entering college student's high school academic and co-curricular experiences, as well as their expectations for participating in educationally purposeful activities during their first year of college. This is administered during Orientation, prior to fall classes beginning. 

How to Access & Use the Advising Report

BCSSE Advising Report Guide The guide describes and explains the importance of seven critical areas focusing on expectations, commitment, engagement, and preparation. The student individual reports who took the BCSSE survey are available to advisors through Advising Notes in Starfish.

New Student 6-Week Check-In Survey

Survey that collects data about newly enrolled UMSL freshman and transfer student's academic and co-curricular experiences during their first four to six weeks of being on campus. The survey includes students expectations, connections to campus, management of stress as it relates to the transition to college, and requested needs identified in support services and co-curricular opportunities at UMSL. This is administered electronically during their four to six weeks of being on campus.  

Orientation Program Evaluation

This survey includes common questions/themes for Orientation evaluation process and obtains immediate feedback regarding Orientation experience. At the end of Orientation (New Student Orientation, Transfer Student Orientation, Online Orientation Completion) students are asked to complete an online survey detailing their experiences. The data compiled gives the orientation and college staff instant feedback on student's thoughts on presentations, their Orientation Leaders, and the advising staff.
