New Student Orientation Advising-
By the time you attend Orientation, your advisor already knows your name. You may have even met electronically or in person. Your advisor will help you learn to navigate campus, your academic preparation, course preferences, and your advisor's knowledge of University requirements will come together as your craft an UMSL academic plan.
Before you meet with an academic advisor, please read the Bulletin to review university course descriptions, academic requirements, and general education requirements at www.umsl.edu/bulletin. After all, you want to be in the driver's seat as you plan your educational path!
The questionnaire you fill out while registering for NSO will be used by the advisors to come up with a tentative class schedule for you. During your Orientation experience, you will have time to sit down and finalize your schedule and ask any final questions. If you would like to meet individually with an academic advisor prior to Orientation to have preliminary discussions, please contact your specific college.
Transfer Student Orientation Advising-
Advising is not scheduled into the orientation day. Due to the varied advising needs of transfer students, you need to contact your advisor to be advised during your own, separate advising appointment. However, at orientation, we will acquaint you with the online registration process that you will use during your career at UMSL. Students are encouraged to be advised prior to orientation so that we may assist you with the online registration process at orientation.
Regardless of how you choose to schedule your advising, you must meet with your advisor before you will be allowed to register for any classes. Transfer students should bring all transcripts and test scores with them to their advising appointment if a transcript evaluation is not complete. If you are unsure of the status of your transcripts please contact the Admissions Office at 314-516-5451.
Students who have not yet declared a major are advised by the College of Arts and Sciences. Please contact 314-516-5501 for more information or to make an advising appointment.
Students are advised by their specific college or department. If you are unsure who your advisor is, please click on the links to the right.
At UMSL, class registration is completed through MyView, the student registration system. Transfer students will register for their classes at their orientation session if they have been cleared by their advisor. Students that have not met with an advisor before their orientation session will not be able to register for classes at orientation. Transfer students are encouraged to contact their advisor as soon as possible after they have been admitted to the university and their transcript evaluation has been completed.
