SOPHOMORE | MECHANICAL ENGINEERING MAJOR
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

"I do my best at all times to set a good example for those around me. I believe that by doing so it will inspire others to do their best and strive to succeed. I also encourage others to get involved on campus. I think it is very important to do so because of the connections you make and the experience you gain. A lot of our organizations are those that exist to help others in one way or another."

Thomas has definitely taken advantage of all the opportunities that UMSL offers! He’s a member of Sigma Pi and will be the Scholarship Chair and Recruitment Co-chair for them this year. He’s active in the Pierre Laclede Honors College Student Association where he served as the freshman representative last year and will be Treasurer this year. If you’re a new student here UMSL, you might have seen Thomas at Orientation because he’s also an Orientation Leader! Some of his other positions this year include, SMART Mentor for the Pierre Laclede Honors College, Residential Peer Mentor of the Engineering Living Learning Community at Oak Hall, Senator of Student Government Association, and the Entertainment Chair of the University Program Board. If you’re looking to get involved on campus, Thomas is the person to talk to!

All of these roles have helped teach Thomas some important lessons. He’s learned the importance of teamwork and that everyone has to use their strengths and weaknesses to get the job done. He’s also learned that it’s important to be conscious of these strengths and weaknesses so you know what you have to offer and where you might need help. He’s also been given the chance to develop his interpersonal skills, as well as his communication, management, and networking skills. He know that these things will be very beneficial to him in his future career!

Thomas loves UMSL because of the diversity that the campus has. He also enjoys his time in class because the professors seem to genuinely love their jobs and treat their students well. His favorite leadership quote is “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” –Jack Welch
