M-273: Russell-Allen Family Papers

HISTORY: This collection was donated to the St. Louis Mercantile Library in 2005 by Dennis Babbitt.

SCOPE: Collection contains letters, deeds, and financial papers from the Russell and Allen families, dating from 1845-1920.

First generation - William Russell (b.?- d.1855). Col° 7th & District Commandant in the Territory of Missouri and early settler of St. Louis.

Second Generation - daughter Ann Clementina Russell (b.? - d.1907) married Thomas Allen (b. 1813 - d.1882) in 1842. Following his death she re-married Duke Pietro Lante Della Rovere, of Italy. Thomas Allen served as first president of the Missouri Pacific railroad, president of the St. Louis & Terre Haute railroad, and president of the Iron Mountain railroad. In 1880 he was elected to represent the second district of Missouri in the US House.

Third Generation (Thomas and Ann's sons) - William Russell Allen (b. 1847-?) married to Louisa Billings Woodward; and George W. Allen (b. 1852-?).

Fourth Generation (son of William and Louisa)- William Russell Allen, Jr.

Also included are papers from Frank B. York and his wife Mary York (business partners with William Russell Allen, Jr.), and Margaret E. Martin, a niece of the Russell Allen family.
