M-31: Henry W. Drinker Journal

HISTORY: Henry W. Drinker's journal is a handwritten copy of the original for Rebecca W. Drinker from her nephew, F.B.D., 1878.

SCOPE: Covering 13 March 1812 to June 1812, "Journal of a Passage from St. Louis to New Orleans" relates Drinker's trip by canoe on the Mississippi River. His writings about specific places and meetings with people was descriptive and interspersed with philosophical thoughts. He observed the results of the New Madrid earthquake, which occurred December 16, 1811. The ravages of the earthquake changed the landscape, the course of the Mississippi River and created a new lake.
