After beginning his academic career first at Haverford College and then Purdue University, Jerry came to the UMSL in 1971. Except for one year, working with a colleague as a Visiting Research Fellow at Birkbeck College of the University of London, Jerry remained a UMSL until he retired in 2004. In the 1980’s, with the advent of the Internet and mobile computers, his interest in information technology was rekindled and after a time developing computing resources for the Mathematics/Computer Science Department, he was given administrative responsibilities for developing such resources for all of UMSL.

After formally retiring, he was hired back for a number of years in an administrative advisory capacity with some academic responsibilities. From 2007 to 2010 he was part of a team that received a Grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Universities commitment to that Grant formally ended in 2015.
