Research Consultations - UMSL Faculty, Staff, or Students ONLY

The Research Consultation Program allows you to receive individualized assistance from a Reference Librarian to complete a research project or assignment. In a Research Consultation, the Reference Librarian will help you develop a research strategy and recommend both print and electronic resources that are appropriate for your research needs. In addition, the Reference Librarian will recommend search terms and resources that will be helpful when completing your research. Please fill out the Request Form with as much detail as possible to schedule a Research Consultation. You can choose to have your Research Consultation completed in-person or via email. Please note, however, that for some topics email is not the best mechanism for receiving research assistance.

  • In Person Research Consultation:  An individual or a group can select the With a Librarian in Person option on the request form. It will normally take one to two working days after receipt of the form to inform you as to when we were able to schedule an appointment. You should be sent an email to notify you when your research consultation is scheduled. You will have to physically come to the library to meet with the librarian or librarians who have prepared to assist you for your specific topic or project. Please indicate on the request form all days and hours that you, or your group, are available to meet.
  • Email Research Consultation: When you select the Email Only option on the request form we will prepare your consultation and email you the results. We will normally do this within one to two working days, but some topics may be too complex for preparation via email. In such cases you may be directed to come to the library for in-person assistance with a librarian. Delays may also occur if we need to contact you for clarification.
  • Chat Research Consultation:  If you choose to have your Research Consultation via online chat you will receive an email from a librarian within one to two working days that will provide you with your appointment time. This email will contain a link to a website that you will need to access at the time of your appointment. From this website you will be able to chat with the librarian who will show you various resources that will assist you with your research topic. Please note that chat research consultations may not be suitable for more complex research topics.
