Costa Rica Spanish Program
During the Winter Intersession, UMSL students are given the opportunity to spend two weeks in Costa Rica and earn 3 credits in Spanish. The students’ first weekend is often spent visiting a tropical rainforest, where they learn about the rainforest ecosystem. They also visit one of the country’s volcanos, or some other unique location. Students return to the San José where they are housed with host families and attend daily language classes at the CRLA (Costa Rica Language Academy). Each student maintains a daily journal about their experiences and is responsible for giving an oral presentation, in Spanish, to the other group members upon their return. It is an experience that has a lasting impact on anyone who participates.
Dominican Republic Spanish and Service Learning
The Dominican Republic program offers students the chance to fully immerse themselves in Dominican culture and the Spanish language and complete a valuable service learning project. Students stay with host families and take language and culture classes, and visit important historical sites in Santo Domingo During the first week. Then, they travel to the interior countryside to work with underserved communities in Bateys. Past projects include installing water filters and planting gardens at homes, filling out family health surveys, and providing workshops on entrepreneurship and business planning to Las palmillas, a women’s co-op that provides a source of income to women in financial need. They then close out the trip with a trip to the beach. For more information please contact Tim Abeln (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Japan Study Tour
The Japan Study Tour is a two-week faculty-led summer program that offers students a wide range of incredible learning experiences as they earn 3 credits in International Business or Japanese Studies. The tour includes lectures in English on Japanese history, culture, and business practices; Japanese-language study; visits to companies, museums, and sites of historical interest; and exchange events with partner universities.
The Japan Study Tour is offered in even-numbered years and, while the itinerary varies from trip to trip, participants can look forward to an astonishing array of authentic experiences in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara.
Highlights of past tours include:
participation in a tea ceremony at the Oka Tei Japanese-style house;
a day at the historic Sanja Matsuri festival in Asakusa;
and so much more!
A non-credit option is available for community members who wish to take part in the tour without receiving undergraduate credit.
Strasbourg French Language Program

In this intensive three-week faculty-led summer program, students will combine coursework at a local language school and classes with UMSL faculty along with tours of major sites of interest, an excursion on the Alsatian Wine Route, a visit to the European Parliament, and much more. Students will experience the rich cultural heritage and picturesque setting of this dynamic European Capital.
