International Business Career Conference 2017

International Business Career Conference 2017

"Going for the Gold

On March 3rd, 2017, the J.C. Penney Conference Center at the University of Missouri- St. Louis campus opened its doors for the 9th annual International Business Career Conference. This year's student-run event drew participants from universities all across the country - as far as Texas and California. The event was kicked-off by the introduction of the MC, Dr. Joseph Rottman, who then introduced the Dean of the College of Business, Charles Hoffman, and the keynote speaker. Following the Olympian theme of the conference - Going for the Gold- the keynote was held by Bob Gambardella, the former Chief of the Singapore Sports Institute. In his speech, Gambardella highlighted the importance of team work and of not having assumptions standing in ones way, especially not in international business.

After the keynote, the stage was entered by a panel of selected experts in the international business world. Led by Tim Nowak, Executive Director of the World Trade Center St. Louis, Laura Last, Priya Marsonia, John Clark, and Juan Carlos Buitrago-Suarez gave students a humorous insight into their day-to-day work life, shared their challenges and best practices when working in international business, and gave students tips on which skills are needed to be successful in the global business world. Afterwards, students had the opportunity to ask questions and engage with the executives.

Following the executive panel, the conference participants split up to attend two of the five workshops offered. In these workshops, students had the chance to learn about different topics related to their future international business career and network with the successful workshop leaders. Afterwards, more networking was encouraged during the "Meet your coach" networking lunch. In an informal atmosphere, students had the opportunity to meet representatives from over 30 local companies and learn about international business career opportunities. The last official agenda topic was the Lunch & Learn, which highlighted the success of Lifepack, a company that combines business, ethics, and sustainability.
