Requirements for all Students

The Gerontology Program at UMSL trains students to be successful community-based practitioners and evidence-based researchers. Two certifications are required of all Master of Science in Gerontology (MSG) students in support of these dual missions.

1. BACKGROUND CHECK (Required for Practicum Placement)

All students must be certified through the Family Care Safety Registry, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and receive a clean background check before being allowed to accrue any practicum hours. Registration is required during the first (and no later than the second) enrolled semester. Documentation should be provided to Dr. Meuser (meusert@umsl.edu) via email attachment (preferred). Depending on the circumstances, those who do not obtain a clean background check and certification may still be able to pursue a practicum. These details are worked out with and by the Program Director. Students with a legal history, particularly past felony conviction(s), should discuss this with Dr. Meuser at the soonest possible opportunity before or during the first enrolled semester. Recent or serious past offenses may prevent completion of program requirements, and hence prevent graduation. Address all questions to Dr. Meuser or the Interim Program Director as appropriate.

2. HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH TRAINING (Required for Research Courses)

The UMSL Institutional Review Board (IRB) requires all individuals engaged in research at UMSL to complete Human Subjects Training (HST). HST may be obtained from one of two free online systems: NIH or CITI Program. MSG students are required to complete one of these two training protocols during the first (and no later than the second) enrolled semester in the program. The NIH protocol takes 2 hours and is fine for most students. The CITI protocol takes up to 10 hours and is great for students planning on a career in research. Documentation should be provided to Dr. Meuser (meusert@umsl.edu) via email attachment (preferred). UMSL is an affiliated institution with both programs - simply choose UMSL from the institutions list when registering.
