About the UMSL NABE Chapter

The purpose of our student chapter of NABE is to promote interaction outside of the classroom among students sharing a common interest in economics. Our chapter was founded in 1993 by a former student, Grant Black (BS 1992; MA 1994) and is a recognized student chapter of National NABE.

In the past, our student chapter has invited outside speakers and sponsored economics seminars. NABE also sponsors the Department of Economics Picnic. This is an annual event, held early in the fall semester, where students, alumni and faculty can enjoy an afternoon of barbeque and fun. Another NABE-sponsored event is Career Day - an event where alumni return to campus and meet with current students.

UMSL NABE students also work together on research projects on the local economy. These projects allow economics majors and graduate students to practice their statistical and econometric techniques on local data and to learn how to do applied work. Greg Nelson (BS/MA 2014), 2013-2014 NABE president, and Melissa Maxwell (BS/MA 2015), 2014-2015 NABE president, were especially helpful in getting these projects started under the supervision of the previous faculty advisor, Brian Speicher, Assistant Teaching Professor of Economics. Project topics have included trying to determine if property assessments in some Saint Louis County school districts are regularly over or underestimated and trying to identify the spatial match between unemployment and job growth in the Saint Louis metro area. Students learn and utilize the statistical packages R and R studio. The projects have a home on GitHub and final reports will be posted on this website.
