Residency in Primary Care/Low Vision Rehabilitation at the Robert J. Dole VA
Medical Center

Description of Program:
This is a one year residency at the Robert J. Dole VAMC in Wichita, KS. The emphasis of this residency will be Ocular disease and Low vision management. The resident will be involved in primary eye care, pre and post-surgical care, ocular disease and low vision evaluation and management at the Robert J. Dole VA.

Educational Opportunities:
The resident will serve in a supervisory role as well in the clinical supervision of Optometry third and fourth year students. The resident will attend the Low Vision Rehabilitation team meetings to develop a plan for the patients visual goals. The resident will be involved in facility Grand Rounds and participate in lectures and journal club. The resident will give Low Vision case presentations. The resident will be given Low Vision Rehabilitation journal articles at the start of the residency to discuss topics with faculty throughout the residency. This residency encourages the resident to consider a personal curriculum for future education in optometry, especially with Low Vision Rehabilitation. The resident will attend at minimum, one professional meeting, usually the annual meeting of the American Academy of Optometry. The resident will serve as a participating author in at least one research paper or literature review or case report suitable for publication in a refereed journal during the residency.

Teaching Responsibilities for Resident/Graduate Student:
During the second half of the residency, the residents take turns proctoring 4th year optometry students. We believe the best way to learn something is to teach it!

Research Responsibilities:
Residents are required to write a paper of publishable quality or present a paper or poster at a national meeting. Although research is not required, residents are encouraged to learn about and/or participate in ongoing projects.
