The fourth year of the professional program at the College of Optometry consists of six eight-week advanced clinical rotations (externships) in the core optometric discipline. One of the rotations must have an ocular disease emphasis and one must be in a large general clinical setting. A minimum of two fourth-year rotations must be taken under the supervision of St. Louis-based College of Optometry faculty. Externships are permitted in private optometric or ophthalmological practices. Each student may petition for attending one externship rotation at a practice location of their development. This "developed site" gives each student the opportunity to devote a portion of their fourth year as an elective to pursue interests in a major optometric clinical field of their interest.

The College of Optometry welcomes practitioner participation in the Externship Progam. Contact Dr. Alex Harris, Director of the Externship Program if you have interest in sponsoring one of our students for a rotation.

Information and resources are available for participating externship faculty.
