Joanne Disch, PhD, RN, FAAN

Joanne Disch is Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing.  She received her BSN from the University of Wisconsin, Madison; her MSN in Cardiovascular Nursing from the University of Alabama in Birmingham; and her PhD in Nursing from the University of Michigan.

Dr Disch has served as a chief nurse executive in two major medical centers and held numerous national leadership positions, such as chair of the UHC Chief Nurse Executive Council; president of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses;  and board member and chair of the national board of AARP.  Currently she is a member of the boards of Aurora Health Care and the National Center for Healthcare Leadership, and president of the American Academy of Nursing. 

Her research has centered on nurse/physician relationships and quality and safety within health care organizations. For the past 8 years, she has been a faculty leader for the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (or QSEN) initiative, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.  She has received a number of awards for her work, among them Outstanding Faculty Member at Rush University College of Nursing; Outstanding Alumna Awards from the University of Wisconsin School of Nursing and the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing; and in 2008, the Distinguished Alumna Award from the University of Wisconsin.
