MSN Program
The College of Nursing
The UMSL College of Nursing was established in 1981 with the initiation of a BSN completion program. A full BSN program including an accelerated option for non-nurses, MSN programs and academic and professional doctoral programs were established by 2000. UMSL is the only public institution in the St. Louis metropolitan area that offers baccalaureate through doctoral nursing education. The College enjoys a mutually beneficial relationship with the region’s health services providers – our community of interest.
College of Nursing Faculty
The College’s nursing faculty members are recognized as leaders in the education of nurses and innovators in nursing practice and research. The faculty, through teaching and research, is at the forefront in the changes in delivery of health care and are dedicated to the advancement of the nursing profession. Student’s have access to faculty through classroom and clinical settings, the internet and extracurricular activities.
Master of Science in Nursing
The College of Nursing offers master's degree nursing studies in three functional roles: nurse educator, nurse manager, and advanced practice nurse. Our MSN programs are offered cooperatively with U MO Kansas City and Columbia. All MSN students complete the MSN ‘core’ curriculum and functional role required courses.
This graduate program offers students three functional roles: 1) nurse educators complete a minimum of 36 credit hours with emphasis in the role of the nurse educator; 2) nurse leaders of health systems complete a minimum of 36 credit hours with emphasis in the role of the nurse leader of health systems; and 3) advanced practice nurses (ANP) complete a minimum of 43 credit hours with emphasis in the role of advanced practice nurse (clinical nurse specialist or nurse practitioner). The Clinical Nurse Specialist track is suspended at this time and we are not accepting applications for that option.
Advanced practice graduates will be eligible to complete national certifying examinations in their functional role. Current APN roles include Adult Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. Graduates completing the clinical specialization or practitioner functional options are eligible for recognition as advanced practice nurses in Missouri. Upon completion of the MSN degree requirements, this degree is awarded by the UMSL Graduate School. Please note that admission is currently suspended for the Nurse Leader and Clinical Nurse Specialist tracks. Building on baccalaureate nursing education, and on completion of the MSN program or post MSN certificate programs, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate integration of advanced knowledge and skills within the context of an advanced professional provide leadership with inter-professional colleagues engaging strategic partners to improve health care outcomes and patient safety,
- Integrate informatics in the design, implementation and evaluation of population –specific interventions,
- Evaluate research findings to implement and disseminate evidence based professional nursing practice,Provide ethically grounded, culturally competent health promotion* with diverse populations.
